Mjolnir class research vessels are focused on science experiments. Unusual for Star Fleet the class is only 3 ships.The most noteworthy thing about them is their extremely powerful structural integrity fields and small crew of very senior scientists and crew, no officer under the rank of Lt. Cmndr serves aboard her and in fact there are three admirals aboard.
THE REAL STORY
All of the above is true except for the fact that there is only one ship of this class serving, Mjolnir. The other 2 ships of the class are available to take up the name.
The true purpose of the ship is to test and operate weapons of discovered ancient tech to use against foes like Q, Trelane and the Borg. Three large weapons bays are found in the fore of the ship. Currently the Mjolnir is sporting, a Klingon stasis generator, some sort of ancient Vulcan psi tech that is currently not understood and a medium power phaser that penetrates all know defencive devices. Also the ship has an advanced Romulan Cloak. you got trouble with a God? or maybe a Doomsday Device? Send in Mjolnir.
