I posted before about this project and then became so busy in its completion, I almost lost track of everything. There has been a MAJOR update to the game including a LOT more art (in the same style as previously included) and a huge amount of rules touch ups, grammatical fixes, and some highly requested new material. More importantly, the game has now been released fully to the public and can be obtained on DriveThruRPG. Here is an outline for those who are new to it, or have forgotten (it is pulled from the DriveThuRPG page).
“This is the initial public release of a complete roleplaying game built upon the foundations of OD&D and Chainmail. Faerie Tales & Folklore is set within the vast and colorful history of Earth, while it draws its more fantastic elements from the mythological traditions of our world’s various cultures. Though not a clone of any current OSR system or product, much of the game will feel familiar to fans of the “old school” style of fantasy roleplaying. Some prominent features of the game are as follows.
1) Familiar mechanics based around the earliest incarnations of one of the world’s most popular roleplaying games.
2) A combat system based around TSR’s Chainmail that utilizes the iconic d20 instead of the d6.
3) A deep magic system that employs a “non-Vancian” methodology and includes such elements as astrology, miracles, rituals, as well as both spell and spontaneous casting.
4) A setting based around the historical, literary, and mythological traditions of the many cultures of Earth. Multiculturalism is baked right in with no need for “cultural manuals” or other such costly additions.
5) A carefully curated selection of public domain artwork from some of the greatest illustrators, painters, and other artists throughout history.
6) Three methods of character creation offering everything from choosing simply an archetype, to a fully randomized method of creating an entire character and their backstory.
7) Nearly 300 creatures, spirits, and monstrous entities from the literature and myths of our own world.
8) A playable span of history reaching from the Stone Age to the early 20th century.
9) A number of natural language sub-systems used to add flexibility and depth to the game system without leaving behind the free form feel of older roleplaying games.
10) A complete system that needs no supplemental materials, beyond the ability to research the history and mythology of Earth.
It is important to note that this is an initial public release. There may be a few typos here and there, but over 2 years has been spent in development so far and such occurrences should (I repeat) should be limited. The PDF will always be available as a Pay What You Want download, but the intent is to provide a high quality, 17-1800s style printing of the work as the only eventual hard copy.
The link to where to find it on DriveThruRPG is located below.
