I have always been intrigued by the idea of a single volume OD&D and have wanted to do that but have lacked the time and the editing skills to pull it off. Since we now have among us someone who has created a single volume OD&D (strictly for his own personal use) I thought it would be interesting to discuss how one would go about doing that for ones self. Unfortunately we can't share or link to our documents since that would violate the Proboards TOS. But discussing how to do it for oneself from ones own documents is safe territory. Now we have someone who can give us advice on how to go about it.
Now in my mind there are certain parameters to consider and I would like to know if I am missing something.
1. Try to leave the original text untouched to the greatest extent possible, while keeping the flow through the reorganized document smooth.
2. Use the earliest printing possible and at least nothing later than a fifth print, due to the fact that the 6th print and later started censoring the text. Ideally you would have access to as a minimum printings 1, 4, 5 and 6.
3. Rigorous proof reading for typos and preserving all the flavor and quirkiness of the original work.
4. The presence of legal pdfs that allow you to copy paste the text (unformatted) into a word document reduces the typing and you only have to add back in the censored text from the earlier printing.
5. As I see it there are a number of different projects that could be done based on personal taste.
A. Single volume OD&D with just the 3 LBBs.
B. Single volume OD&D with the 3 LBBs and the 4 Supplements edited in.
C. Single volume OD&D with the 3 LBBs and the 4 Supplements and The Strategic Review items edited in, including the FAQ by Gygax.
D Single volume OD&D with the 3 LBBs and the 4 Supplements and The Strategic Review items edited in, including the FAQ by Gygax and The Dragon (early issues) As you can see these get progressively more difficult.
E. Single volume OD&D with just the 3 LBBs and our personal good parts from the 4 Supplements, The Strategic Review and The Dragon edited in.
For most of us, well for me at least, I would like to have Option A and Option E(my fully personalized version).
Wouldn't it also be great to be able to pick your own art for your own version?
I love the Frazetta art as my favorite, but there are selected pieces of the original art that I really like of those plain line drawings.
How many of us have made the attempt to do one or more of the above? Are there other options I did not think of?

It also occurred to me that for my personal option E I would also add some things from a few other rulesets and my own personal house rules. As for the well it is AD&D light, I have never subscribed to that opinion since the flavor and the POV is completely different from AD&D even if you used all of the supplements, but I have never known anyone who used more that pieces of the supplements.

Also for our own personal use Option E version, it would not be off limits to add the pieces that we like from our favorite clone(s). A few of you are young enough that you will live to see OD&D go out of copyright, but most of us will not be around then.

This would be so cool to have. Shame TSR never put one out, it would be the RPG monopoly if they had.

Welcome back greyharp! So ... I really love your single volume OD&D edit. Is there anything new to report? Is work on a cleaned up edition you spoke about before going on a walkabout in the works?

I always thought what would be interesting as a project is take each individual "section" of OD&D re-write it as it own section of a retro-clone but like OSRIC with the intent to keep as close as you legally can. Then create a piece of software with a menu system that allows to pick which sections you want to include in your one-volume document and spit out a PDF, TEX, or DOC file with only the things you want in the order you want it.
Of course one had the PDFs of the original could take the data files made for the above and sub in the original text and images for each section and then run it.

Jakob Grimm, I was having this thought myself in the shower - if not do exactly this do a custom version of Delving Deeper with art I prefer. I've actually thought about this for a bit off & on. I think you can see it in a post shortly after I joined the community here. If I did I'd likely edit out references to Chainmail & Outdoor Survival like greyharp did & the people behind DD. Replace the garbage art from the originals & replace them with better B/W art from online or commission some if I could afford to. So I'd have copies for myself & my players. I agree with you Jakob Grimm with A & E for my choices.

I would add:
Single volume OD&D with the 3 LBBs and the Great Plains Thief.
Because the original d6 hit dice progression is superior IMO.

Thanks Piper and very good to see you're still around. Just dusted off the old files a couple of weeks ago and decided to start from scratch to ensure purity. Have the three booklets copied from the pdfs and pasted into Word and have started putting the formatting back into volume 1.

I promise I'll use this thread to keep the forum updated, although working in Human Resources in Local Government means my brain is generally dead weeknights. And I'm more than happy to share - something we can work out along the way. As I mentioned in the Introductions thread, the pdfs I used to extract the text are either 6th or 7th print, but my box set is a 5th print and so is what I based the single volume on.

Quoted from another thread, here is text that is not in the 5th or 6th or later prints, but it is in the 4th print.

Also from another thread: There is more that is not in the 6th print or later, but this is the single biggest chunk.

I'd love to see this, wish it could be published. A hard copy would be great. Same here. But WotC would never allow it as it might bite into their 5e profit margins. I'd still love to have it in hard copy. Technically you could get it printed & bound - I think, as long as it isn't going to be sold.

I'd actually give them my cash for a cleaned up single volume edition with updated black and white art like they had on their premium edition covers.

5. As I see it there are a number of different projects that could be done based on personal taste. A. Single volume OD&D with just the 3 LBBs. B. My preference is very much for separate players’ and DM books. That’s why my personal version is my own 3 book edit where I reordered the 3LBB text to match more modern rule books, and added in texts from only the SR FAQ, Errata from Greyhawk and Chainmail. So I think that’s an alternate set of source material. I tried to only fix obvious typos, with minimal text changes (had some based on moving sections about). I’ve kept most of the original art but pulled out some of the most amateurish pieces.

As a completest kinda guy who has a group demanding plenty of options, I gotta go for AD&D lite ... preferably D, but E could suffice.

I would disagree that option D is AD&D Lite. The focus, flavor and inherent nature of complete OD&D (Option D) is such that they are in major ways two unrelated games. Now while Option D is less open than the three LBBs alone, it is still orders of magnitude more open than AD&D. Further anyone approaching a complete OD&D (Option D) should be approaching it as guidelines, as options not rules, as a toolbox, not a stone monument. The major edit that I would add to these compilations is the frequent reminder that these are options not requirements.
