THE 100-BOOK APPENDIX N READING LIST

I've decided to read all of Appendix N -- every book Gary Gygax recommended in the AD&D 1e DMG, plus at least one book per author where he didn't recommend a specific title/series -- and I needed a comprehensive reading list, so I made one:

The 100-Book Appendix N Reading List

I didn't tweak anything to make it come to exactly a hundred books; that's just how it worked out. The list includes links, notes, and additional information, and is also available as a free PDF and Excel download. I've never seen an Appendix N reading list that breaks things down title by title, and I had fun creating this one. I hope it's useful to you.

Reading Appendix N is my blog series on this project, and my best guess is that it'll take me 2-4 years to read the whole list. Every time I look at my growing to-read stack, I get excited -- there's so much good stuff I've never read or heard of in Appendix N.

If you've never checked out the appendix or the books on it, I encourage you to do so; it's a fantastic well of gaming inspiration and good reading.

I think that these and other related books have a lot of things unmined and waiting to be used.

In this thread The Pulp Magazine Archive it is proposed that we read a lot of the pulps that have been saved on line and have stories that most have never seen. It seems to me that these things all dovetail together.

I don't know if that is a first or last name, but it sounds more like a dolls name than a blokes name.

The “Author info” link will take you to an author’s Wikipedia page — great for seeing their bibliographies and learning more about them and their work. The “Yore posts” link will take you to posts on this blog about that author and their work (if present). “Free ebooks,” if present, will link you to the author’s Project Gutenberg page so you can locate legal free copies of their work. Book titles link to Amazon, with a bias to collected editions when I could find them.

In cases where Gary didn’t list titles or series for an author, I’ve recommended a specific book based on my research, personal experience, or both.

I always felt that not including Arthur Conan Doyle’s “The Lost World” was an huge oversite. Its a great read and no less a fantasy than Tarzan.

If you haven’t read it then you owe it to yourself to do so. Its aged well and still holds surprises.

R.E. Howard loved The Lost World so much he named his favourite character after the author.

Appendix N: A List of Books That Inspired the Creation of Dungeons & Dragons Appendix N is a list of books that helped inspire Gary Gygax to create Dungeons & Dragons (D&D). It is an appendix in the 1st Edition AD&D Dungeon Master's Guide (1979). This list was compiled directly from the work of Martin Ralya and his blog at martinralya.com/yore.


I know this title is giving Gygax and Appendix N too much credit in regard to D&D, but you can rightly say Appendix N is behind Greyhawk.
