What weapons do you allow magic-users to use and why? Does it make a difference whether or not it is a mundane or magic weapon?
I allow magic-users to use daggers/knives, quarterstaff (6-9 feet long), sling, bow & arrow. They have a -2 to hit with all weapons other than the dagger/knife, unless they want the option of 33% fewer spells to eliminate the -2 to hit.
The only difference is a magical staff is 5-7 feet long. Elven fighter/magic-users are not subject to the -2 to hit and can use any weapon.
If a magic-user wants to use a sword, I will allow it but they have to give up half of all spells at every level and spell progression is slowed due to all the time required to learn how to use a sword without it being a danger to themselves. Eleven fighter/magic-users also give up half of all spells at every level, but spell progression is not slowed.

Only one non-standard weapon depending on setting or if they are Elves (man-at-arms/magic-users).

I run low level games(under 7th) so MUs def need some juice, one of the house rules of mine are letting wiz use a Long sword.

I like to see magic-users with swords and I agree they should have a penalty for the privilege.

In 1977, Bakshi established (forever and ever) that wizards are allowed to use pistols, as long as they wear dunce caps with stars on them.

Another thought is you could give the Wiz a magic wand that acts like a long sword. A wand that is a sling or short bow is also some options if you dont want to extend swords to mages.

I don't care what they use, their low hit scores balance most of it out anyway. Wizards can't cause critical wounds with an off weapon, they gain no bonuss if the item is magic, and the chances for a critical fumble are doubled. A wizard wearing armor is unable to cast spells until they remove it.
