Player Edition
Here are some guidelines you may wish to consider when participating in a PbP game. I’ll probably fiddle with these a bit but thought I’d get them up here in order to get some feedback.
Commitment: if you sign up for a game, do your best to post regular turns. Even if it is merely to “continue previous actions” though retyping your previous action would help ease things for your referee.
In Character or Out of Character: it’s common to use ooc: (out of character) to preface something you, as opposed to your character, are saying. Many referees prefer you to offset your player-character talk with a different color, though you should probably avoid red. Red text is typically used by forum administrators/moderators for very important posts.
ID Yourself: don’t just type my character or Boromir says ... instead type Boromir (FTR-1) says. This will ease things on game master.
Make Lots of If ... Then Replies: This will help the referee adjudicate the action more to your style of play. Boromir (FTR-1) kicks the door. If it opens, he’ll charge into the room, weapon ready. If it does not open, he prepares a second attempt at bashing the door open. If the princess is in the room he’ll go to one knee and present his weapon, but if she is being held prisoner Boromir will attack her kidnappers, etc. . .
PC to PC Interaction: clear any interaction beyond verbal communication with the player of the PC in question. Failing that? At the most perform the start of an interaction and allow the other player to decide how to respond. Example: Boromir offers Elrond the potion he just found, Wanna try it? He would not type instead that he gives Elrond the potion, who drinks it then dies of poison.
The Usual: tracking your inventory, being a team player, getting into the spirit of the game, etc. In other words? All the aspects important to sitting at a table with friends applies equally to a PbP game.
Have a Problem? If you have any issue, please address it to your gaming sub-forum moderator and get his feedback. If you don’t get a satisfactory response, escalate it to @piper or mormonyoyoman and let us get together with your game ref/mod and see if we can figure out what to do.
Have Fun!: that’s why we do this, after all!
