I am going to a convention in March, we will be plying 5E which I know nothing about. I came in 2nd two years ago and I want to repeat that.I would prefer to play a fighter or a wiz but I am open to good Ideas w other classes. About the only parameters for this would be : no dumb(as in not smart) and I only play team players. My first idea is to write a bunch of poems and spout them during combat as a fighter(a sort of Cyrano Debegarac, but this is kinda close to my last char(wiz for whom I wrote out his verbal components of spells. Thanx in advance.

Well, it has your basic D&D 3d6 roll for attributes, then you pick a race (with potential sub-race)- each race gives you various abilities & often a choice of default skills. Then you pick a class - with a variety of basic options to choose from; plus initial abilities. At level 3 you choose an archetype, which is a spin on a kit or prestige class - you have to pick one & you get extra abilities based on it & a hint on playing it. Then you pick a background which gives you equipment, skills & a selection of random charts giving you background elements to work with. Then you do equipment beyond what you get with your background & then you roll to get a trinket, a random piece of equipment your GM can use to seed personal background hook or simply be a RP seed you create.
Depending on level you start with for the con, if you like fighters - a Eldritch Knight could work, casting spells, spouting poetry between sword thrusts.
