Ok First you need to buy into a couple of things 1) gods can only be permanently on their home plain. 2) there exist a group of gods who are quite weak(gods of Torches,Copper Coins,matches, bent nails etc) When you confront these petty gods on their home plane, they must be challenged in a way that relates to their godly portfolio.o for example the god of stolen kisses would be fougt in a kissing contest, the god of bent nails could be beaten in a nail straightening manor. A secret code word for each diety makes this happen when you are on the home turf.

I run the deities somewhat differently IMC, but I enjoyed your post very much.

IMC? The deities are absolute powers on their respective planes, and thus rarely leave them. Instead they send avatars or angels to the Prime Material to enforce their will (if their representatives, the Clerics, are not equal to the task). On their home planes, the deities cannot be defeated. This is why they rarely leave that plane.
I do not follow the thinking of a lot of D&D'ers of: if it has hit points it can be killed school of thought. Nothing wrong with that way, but it just isn't my bag.

Very interesting.
Not sure if this is what you mean, but here's what I took from the OP:
Sometimes people play that a god can be killed by high-level characters that are strong enough.
You propose a glut of gods of various things who can be defeated in a manner linked to their godly sphere of activity.
I like it!

The god of chance, beaten at dice.
The god of love, teased into submission.
The god of money, scammed into bankruptcy.

I have found the following methods to be most effective:
"'You may seek gods with thimbles—and seek them with care;
You may hunt' em with forks and hope;
You may threaten deity with a railway-share;
You may charm them with smiles and soap—'"

The rest are "petty" cause they were imprisoned and are now crazy from 20,000+ years of confinement>

My deities cannot be defeated or killed by mortals - if you try to kill them, they either wink you out of existence or torture you until you are nothing but a broken slave to their will. I never understood PCs being able to battle gods, demons & other lesser spirits but they would be hard to beat.
