Translation of the rules of the Damier Geographique
“The Allies is played with 4 people; the 1st one represents the armies which are French, English and Belgian, with 24 soldier pawns and the Italian army with 12, in a battle against a 2nd player who represents a part of Germany with 24 pawns and one part of Austria with 12 (1st zone). The 3rd person represents Russia and its allied neighbors with 24 pawns and fights against a 4th person who represents the other part of Germany with 12 pawns and the other part of Austria, which includes its Balkan allies with 12 pawns (2nd zone).
“There must be 2 distinct battles taking place, each on one zone with 2 groups of allies: France, Russia, England, Italy, etc. against the Central Empires, etc. The boundary of the zones cannot be crossed. You place the soldiers as you wish on the color blocks of the territory to be defended; however there must be at least one empty colored block between the pawns and the enemy border only; you may place them near the borders of the countries of Switzerland, Belgium and Holland; Holland only is diplomatically immune, consequently you may pass, even for starting on to Switzerland or Belgium.
“You play one after the other by pushing one pawn in such direction as you wish, but always from one color block to another colored block. The pawns move one block at a time only. You may battle while retreating but not in front of a captured enemy. If it is the French who attack in the 1st zone, it will be Austro-Germany in the 2nd.
“The goal of the game is to take all the enemies proceeding as in an ordinary Game of Checkers. When one soldier makes it after finishing the attack, on an enemy fortress, he is proclaimed General, which corresponds to the King, in order to distinguish it from the similar ones, you cover it with a pawn of the same nationality. One soldier who has behind him an empty block can be taken by an enemy pawn touching him, and by a General even though he is at a distance of some empty blocks on the same line. The pawn who takes a jump on/over the taken enemy and places himself on the empty block, if from this place there was a new space to take, would continue.
“The General places himself on one of the empty blocks behind the taken enemy and continues to take, even while changing the line if there is space, the pawns and the Generals taken. Every soldier or General taken is distracted from the game by the final blow/hit. You can huff like in checkers, or force the adversary to play. One fight is null or undecided when there remains less than three Generals for one and one single one to the other; in this case, the second fight is decisive for the entire battle, the Ally profits from the victory. If the two fights were undecided, there would be a restart. One fight is finished when all the enemy soldiers are taken, or that those who remain are unable to move, consequently prisoners.
“When one fight is finished, the Ally of the victor directs (as up to him) the soldiers and the Generals who remain to this victor. The borders of the zones may be crossed as in the following case. If perhaps the two fights would finish in the same time and the survivors be enemies, the fight would continue, and the troops would be directed by their own Director. The battle is null when one Ally loses and when the other wins. The battle is won when the Allies are victors in the two fights.
“The Allies may play by two when operating only on one zone, then also power against power, 12 soldiers with each one, while keeping in mind the following observations: France against Germany; – Except for Belgium the other powers are neutral, the Generals are named to the nearest fortresses to the French-German border; Russia against German. – Other powers unassailable. The Generals are named to the fortresses nearest the Russian-German border. – Russia against Austria: other neutral powers. The Austrian Generals are named to the East Russian fortress.”
