Some Possible class features to upgrade wizards (It is not uncommon for players to play in my game for 15-20 games before making 2nd, so keep that in mind when you read this)
D8 Hit Die
Never liked d4 hit die for wizards, I choose to belive that being filled with arcane power makes you stronger not weaker
Long Swords
Gandalf, nuff said
Cantrips
Even The 1e ones are great if you use a little creativity
Wands
I'll post a link to this idea
and now for a little "payback"
Sleep, no way am I letting a wizard have that Spell, It should be like 3rd level(Oh I think I'm gonna do that)

I like it all. Sleep has always been a fascinating spell to me. It's an extremely powerful "I win" spell that seems at first glance out of place at first level. On the other hand, it's the beginning wizard's primary combat spell. It's also nonviolent which has some nice utility.
That all said, you gave them d8's for HD so I think that balances out nicely.

Without the sleep spell the low level Magic-Users would really be a weak class.

Magic users dont need anything. They are already easily the strongest class.
