This is the place for players to discuss the upcoming game and get to know one another and anything else game related that you want to discuss. Feel free to shoot the breeze and kick around ideas and discuss what you may want to do. Obviously that will expand/change/grow as I get more of the run-up posting completed, especially for the Character Creation part.

Calling all players, why don't we get to know each other and discuss the kind of adventure we are interested in. I am up for dungeon crawls, hex crawls in the wilderness or pretty much anything else. I just want to play. I like the whole exploration vibe of "old school" and like to avoid combat when possible, but if it comes to a fight I'm there.

These are open now - it won't be long then.
My interests are pretty much the same (hey we're twins give me a break) but I would like to reach higher level and become a warlord.

Well, I suppose I should get to work creating followers and such. Never procrastinate today what you can procrastinate tomorrow, that's my motto.

Being in one hex crawl game right now, I'd vote for dungeon exploration (which tends to be safer for low level PCs anyway...).

Aha, okay.
I'm up for dungeon or wilderness exploration, certainly. Am flexible.

Do all of you want to start already knowing each other or do you want to meet and put it together? I will get the character creation open as quickly as I can, since race and class may effect that decision.

I think it tends to go a bit better everyone already knowing each other, but if we play it out, let's all work to make sure our characters are agreeable to each other. The worst is role playing putting the party together and winding up in a fight...

Sounds good to me. I shall work on my following fellows in the morning, if I can remember where that post is. You know, the one which had the attribute rolls and that stuff right there.

I like to play rogue/thief types or straight-up warriors. I have one set of rolls perfectly made for a fighter, so I am thinking of making a lizard man fighter. You can count on me to be up front of the party, act bravely, and defer to the smarter members of the party

Ok my stats so far, #2 looks most attractive as an elf fighter/magic user (assuming you have those)

I am also flexible and would be fine with dungeons crawls or anything else.

You are limited to leather when you as casting spells, unless you can obtain magical armor, if it is of elven make it has benefits beyond the protection of armor.
Yeah, this a house rule I need to get posted in the house rules section.

Oh, BTW, players can make suggestions or requests to each other as to what equipment and supplies each of you obtains, I will not be making suggestions, so you may want to help each other not forget things. That applies to all parts of the game. If you don't want suggestions from your fellow players, just role play not taking advice.

The worst is role playing putting the party together and winding up in a fight... Naw. The *worst* is playing through creating the party and THEN have the game die . . . And second worst is playing through one adventure [taking three years real time to do so], then have a new player join the party who takes an unaccountable dislike to your character, such that you eventually give up and leave the game. Or maybe I've got those backwards?

. . . these are much larger ships that those usually built . . . a disaster waiting to happen. Yep. "Too big to fail," anyone?

I would hope no one will disrupt the game with any significant interpersonal conflicts. That is one area that gaming IMO should depart from realism, especially in a pbp vs face-to-face. While there may be some disagreement from time to time by players on the course of action by the group, I would hope that those disagreements are not lengthy things that make the game drag. While it is much easier to resolve those things in a face-to-face game with people who have known each other for years, I would hope that everyone approaches the game as though you are playing with old friends and not strangers over the internet. IMO that attitude will help the game go smoother and IMO it will be more fun for everyone.

Yep. "Too big to fail," anyone? That is not exactly what I was trying to convey, more along the lines of "This is something new, it can't possibly work" attitude by many. True. But the ships might actually be too big. That is, the construction methods used to build smaller ships might not work so well when scaled up too far. Wasn't there a [relatively] huge medieval warship which capsized and sank in calm seas, right after being launched?

You are thinking of the Vasa, a huge ship designed by Swedish King Gustavus Adolphus in 1620's. It sank right after launching
A google search will bring up exact details

Eh, I just remembered Gustavus Adolphus, the internet did the rest. I have a soft spot for Gustavus as one of the first war games I played was the battle of Breitenfeld from the Thirty Years War, and I had the Swedes under Gustavus. Made me want to learn more history

I also benefitted from Project Warrior, when PACAF decided to sponsor those of us who were targets, in stocking and playing war games. Which included, thanks to a modest supply sergeant, Holmes D&D, Tunnels and Trolls, as well as Squad Leader.

I love Eric Flint's Ring of Fire universe and have read probably 80% of the published books. Eric Flint is an author that is not afraid of pdfs and there is a ton of fan fiction if I had time to go to the site and read it.
