I've begun to watch a lot of YouTube D&D stuff, and a Twitch show called Critical Role keeps coming up. It is a live, unscripted weekly game of D&D played by a group of actors. There are high production values. The episodes are available on YouTube. People really seem to like the show. I tried to watch it and the gaming wasn't to my taste. But it's very popular. If you have not seen or heard of it, here is the link: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDXQ_XXbAws7gyakXAPAC8XmqzW38IvbkHave you watched it? Are you a regular viewer? What do you like about it? How would you go about convincing me to give it another try?

I have never watched this and I appreciate the link, I will try to watch one when I can squeeze it in. There is a ton of RPG stuff on YouTube.

It's apparently a very popular way for non-gamers to be exposed to the hobby nowadays

Yes. Are you a regular viewer? Yes. What do you like about it? It's 5E through the lens of celebrity video game voice actors. Mercer is a passionate DM and one of the very few actual professional DMs on the planet. He paints with words better than 99% of the DMs I've seen. His campaign setting is very vibrant and creative: greenroninstore.com/products/critical-role-tal-dorei-campaign-settingThe biggest thing I look for in a stream is a DM that doesn't railroad. Mercer fits that mold, thankfully. Grog is funny. How would you go about convincing me to give it another try? Well, it's not perfect. Combats can be hours(!) long. It can be overly melodramatic and emotional much of time. Think "soap opera." Mercer often falls in love with his own words, even though they are quite pretty. That said, if you want a theatrical, rules-strict, sandbox campaign with a healthy dose of PC plot armor, then CR is a solid choice. It's far from my favorite though. For me, it's nice, soothing background noise when I get that 5E itch.

Huh! Good recommendation! And it tracks with what I saw too.
You say it and not your favorite. Do you like another one better?

I enjoy the Chris Perkins DM'ed games and their spinoffs: Acquisitions Inc. Dice, Camera, Action! Force Grey The C-Team Binwin's Minions The PAX live shows are great too. Also, D&D's official Twitch and YouTube channels showcase a lot of different play-styles. All 5E though

I don't watch it but nearly everyone in my old group did & loved it. It just doesn't appeal to me, I don't like watching other people play; I'd rather be playing or doing something constructive for three hours. But I won't slam others for liking it though.

I haven't watched this yet, but there are tons of stuff on youtube and some of it is very entertaining and others not so much. Some people have a very infectious delivery and other people are just boring.
