Over the last couple of years I've collected a number of visual resources (what we call 'pictures' when we're not thinking teacher thoughts). Since I've run games in the medieval Balkans (with vampires), a kind of Ravenloft affair (taking the ethos of Ravenloft as A Place Where Bad People Go and leaving out most of the TSR fiddle-faddle) and the Warhammer World's Sylvania (with yet more vampires) I've tended to collect some dark forests and the castles that occupy them. Here are a few from the collection:

What I like about this one is the proximity of the forest to the walls. It emphasises that "we are at war with the land itself and there is a firm line between what is Ours and what is Outside" effect that's so characteristic of, say, WFRP.

A whole bunch here. The 'lookbook' in question is for my Vampire: the Dark Ages game, by the way.

This one was quite influential on Titan's aesthetic (it's the peaks poking through the clouds that do it for me, every time).

Small, but perfectly formed. The castle of Laird Edmund, whose murder of his wife and daughter earned him a place in Ravenloft. No woman to whom he takes a fancy lives more than a week, as player character Caitlin was appalled to discover. She'd already died once in two days...

Far beyond the black horizon / beyond the fields we know / everybody got a destination / everybody got a place to go
