There are so many ways folks use OSR to describe their own D&D campaign/s. Many like the Old School aspect. Or Revival/Renaissance to finish it off.
While that is not totally offensive, I thought of something I feel is more appropriate--for my taste--and that I will keep in mind henceforth. And it is this:
Open System Ruling
This clearly embodies the principles that Dave Arneson assembled into his methodology needed to run the game. I think it says it all.
Anyway, just my 2 coppers.

You can't make a definition of it. It defies any one single definition. It's bigger than words; bigger than all of us.

I'm just OSR = Old School Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! & OSR = Old School Rules!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I like these! I would add OSR = Old School Resistance & OSR = Old School Rebellion But for me I just go with OS = Old School no more and no less.

I don’t think this can replace the original OSR meaning, but I think I like it better. More descriptive of an actual play style and hence more useful. I can see it as part of a tagline or subtitle to a retro-clone/variant/supplement. Just 2 more coppers in the pot.

Those who started over 40 years ago and have stayed with OD&D I can really see claiming OSR = Old School Resistance as theirs!

I also like captaincrumbcake's Open System Ruling too.

Dag, I thought it was the second runner-up to the ABCs.

I think of it as an Old School Resurgence since a common refrain in the innerwebs is a rekindling of interest in the early forms of D&D among those who used to play on the regular but stopped for whatever reasons. I like "resurgence" because it seems phenomenologically accurate in terms of the sheer numbers of old school gamers, obviously includes players of the original games, & can encompass the retroclones & heartbreakers of the gaming scene without assuming their excellence (as would be implied by "Renaissance").

I suppose OSR can mean anything one wants to come up with to fit the letters.
For me, Open System Ruling describes what OD&D is. Old School Revival/Renaissance (etc.) describes why people are returning to it.
At least that's how I see it. Everyone's mileage may vary.

I used the word "includes" in my post, which indicates that the people & things that I specified are not the only OSR constituents. :-)
