Just to start things off on world building - remember this is not a how to, this is some things to consider. A meal can consist of a light snack or a full 21 course dinner. Everyone's perfect 21 course dinner would be different. It works the same way with world building. So here are a few things to think about -this is not the One True Way! Welcome to World Builders™That is a great site and it would be a really cool class to take. Using the lesson outline as a preliminary draft outline for doing a real nuts and bolts job I am posting the following below. Feel free to add or delete, tweak etc. I figure several drafts should start whipping it into shape. Remember things to think about - not a must follow every step. Pick the ones that make your heart beat faster. World Builder Outline (first preliminary draft) I. Planetary Structure 1. Astronomy 2. Geology 3. Meteorology II The Emergence of Life 4. Microbiology III The World of Water (Oceans, Seas, Lakes and Rivers) 5. Marine Botany 6. Marine Zoology 7. Marine Ecology IV The World of the Land 8. Botany 9. Zoology 10. Land Ecology V The World of the Air 11. Zoology 12. Air Ecology VI Populating the World 13. The Unintelligent Creatures 14. The Semi-Intelligent Creatures 15. The Intelligent Creatures VII The Social & Political Makeup of the World 16. Using Historical Settings as a Resource 17. Using Literary Settings as a Resource 18. Creating & Using Homebrew Settings VIII How Tie it All Together 19. Myths 20. Legends 21. Folktales 22. Lost Civilizations 23. Ruins 24. Artifacts

Never saw this thread before. Bumping and may return to it. The link in the OP works and some of the links on that page still work, while some do not. I'm particularly interested in The Archivist 's list from VI on down. I will try to return and make comments but for now, I am into VI: Would never have thought of structuring anything this way but it sounds doable. Beasts, intelligent (human-like?) creatures, and some in between. This will require a bit of meditation.

I would imagine the links that don't work might be available at the Internet Archive. I think that structure covers all the creatures, you would I think start by defining what you think the categories mean and then proceed from there. Might be fun to put a lot of things under 14 that most people would kneejerk into 13 and put some 14's into 15 and also move some the other direction. That would through the players for a loop.

Now that is a good idea. Maybe we should have a thread about that, or continue this one. I like that idea a lot.

I think maybe start a new thread and continue to discuss the parts here and start new threads as they happen.

I am too tired to organize this at the moment, but will try to do it tomorrow unless you do it first!
