Still, a lot of variables to consider. How much of the area around the settlement is commercial farm land? How much is wilderness for hunting? Do individual families get to farm and/or grove their own lot? Can they raise livestock? How much do they get to keep and how much must go up the chain? Are we talking about humans? hobbits? elves? dwarfs? gnomes? Each race tends to be distributed differently in my imaginary world. Very generally speaking, I would segment a human habitation as follows: | Infant/Young 0-6 | 07% | | Prepubescent 7-12 | 10% | | YA M/F 13-20 | 20% | | Adult M/F 21-43 | 40% | | Mature 44-54 | 15% | | Senior 55-65 | 05% | | Aged 66+ | 03% |
The age categories and %'s are just examples. One could plug in whatever best applies to their own perspective. But that's (a table) where I would start, with each habitation I planned on designing. |

Habitation - one extended family
Hamlet - two to ten extended families
Settlement - eleven to 10 extended families - might have a single small "inn/country store"
Village - population of 100 to 1000 people
Town - population of 1001 to 8000 people
Borough - two towns or a town and city or two cities closely together such as opposite sides of a river
City - population of 8001 to 15,000 people
Metropolis/Big City - 15,001 to 100,000 people rarely even larger up to 200,000
