the medieval era runs from about the 5th century, to the 15th century and there is a lot of variation in that approximately 1000 year period.
Candles and wood were expensive things and many people had to make do without them. Candles and torches do not give very good light and they were not burning all the time during the whole night. People tended to go to bed at nightfall and get up at daybreak.
