By the book, the DM would roll up your stats out of sight and then hand you the character sheet to finish. How strange! I suspect there were a lot of shenanigans happening back out of sight.
I prefer to go hardcore for my own character's stats. 3d6 in order, no backsies. Nobody I know does that though, not even on message boards.
I had a hobbit fighting woman with a STR of 9 and a CON and WIS of 4. She was a chain smoker with a short bow. She wore a dress under her leather armor. She wasn't too precious! There's no way you would ever build that character from any other chargen method.
In Mythical Journeys, I suggest tic-tac-toe chargen. People seem to like it once the lightbulb goes on and they realize what it implies.
How do you like to do it, or have you heard of/tried something fun you would like to share?

Great topic, Scott. I like 3d6 down the line for OD&D, Lamentations of the Flame Princess, & AD&D. About 50% of my players use it. The other method that we use in our Arduinian AD&D campaign for people who want a shot at a, say, out-of-the-box competent ranger is to roll 18d6 & distribute three dice to each attribute (players' choice). Plus it's fun to roll loads of dice.
Three PCs in my group have Int between 5 & 7 and it has lead to hilarious role-playing situations. Two of the PCs concerned are both trollborn, & because of their racial affinity & mutual stupidity, each thinks the other the wisest in the party.

Favored methods at home:
3d6 in order, swap two scores if you want.
3d6 in order, roll up 6 - 8 sets of stats (no more than twice as many as needed), players pick set.
3d6 in order, but player can choose to "push" one die to the next stat and replace it with a different roll.

Bitd 3d6 in order no adjustments and no redo's ever. No complaints ever. And even in the current times I have do it the same way, with one exception which I will get to in a moment. Bitd we rolled our own characters using the ref's dice with the ref as one of many witnesses. Currently I roll up all of the characters and just hand it to them or I hold out ten sheets and they pick one. This is because we play once per month (game currently on hiatus, while I see how things shake out with health stuff) and I/We don't want to waste precious playing time.
Currently I am running a campaign with no demi-humans. The Character races are human, lizard/reptile men, insectoid men and aliens. For this I give players a choice. I will roll up the characters either 4d6 in order drop the lowest or 3d6 in order and I customize the character. By that I mean for instance that the characteristics of a swamp bread reptile man would have a lot different natural abilities that a desert cliff bread lizard man and so on. The insectoid man 4 legs or 6 or 8 and can they water walk or not. Or do they spin web, and can they scurry across the underside of a surface and so no. The alien, could be any of several different things and so on.

The races sound like sword & planet high adventure, true? Yeah, sword & planet high adventure is what I was shooting for mixed with OD&D medieval fantasy adventure. A little of this and a little of that.

I do the rolls for my play by post. Scott, are you talking about ruby? She actually had Str 7... She also had Int 14 anc Cha 14...
I have re-rolled stats when they've been really bad.

LOL If Ruby had a 7 strength she would have been a something different! I guess a human wizard? Such a little change makes all the difference.
I kept her sheet. She is dear to me despite being a reminder of how I failed you.

Or you could just give everyone straight 3's and see what they do with it.

She is dear to me despite being a reminder of how I failed you. Hmm, did you transpose, here's the original rollup: Roll up for Scott Anderson: Str 7 Int 14 Wis 4 Con 4 Dex 11 Cha 14 Gold 80 An interesting set... If two 4's really depress you I will re-roll. Pick race, class, and alignment, then I will roll social standing (which could increase gold). And there's a perfect example of how I handle a possibly distressing set of rolls. I was surprised you didn't go with a Magic User, but perhaps that was in part due to the number of MUs in the party. Frank

Currently I'm doing 3d6 in order with a stable of six characters per player. They pick two to start.
