Opinion Editorial from your faithful Editor in Chief, Caedmon the Calumniator
Watching the rising sun on this vernal equinox morn, I couldn't help but sigh knowing that a new season of war for the followers of the prince pf peace would soon be on the way. All of our noble monarchs of Christendom would be the first to swear allegiance to the church, her law and to acknowledge that they all must bow to the one King of Heaven. Nevertheless it is clear that they have all got the notion in their heads that the only way to protect and advance Christendom of earth is to reunify Christendom under one Emperor, as of old. Clearly the King of Heaven needs a viceroy on earth.
The newly crowned and still young Emperor Constans, of course, has the title built right in! As the heir of the ancient Lawful Emperors, he is clearly certain who the emperor of all Christendom is: himself. His approach to this is clearly that of suppressing rebellion rather than conquering lands: all lawful churchman, he claims, are his imperial subjects here on earth. And in the end, who among the monarchs of Christendom will be able to resist him? His steely constitution makes him more than simply just! But, like all our monarchs at the time of writing, will he be able to handle the troubles in his own garden? Not all his realms seem willing to acknowledge his accession!
King Aelfred recognizes and salutes the ancient empire, but he is confident in the promise of the Once and Future King. Heaven's own promise to Logres means that Logres ought clearly to take the lead in unifying Christendom against Chaos from within and without. He may just be the one who will lead us all in the battle against chaos -- his reputation is more than mere flattery. His wisdom may just win the day. Nevertheless, those distant Celts continue to trouble him, don't they?
The Grand Duchess, her royal highness, Eleanor the Unquenchable, demands her own imperial claims to be recognized as an heir of Charles the Great. Will she continue to defame her distant relative, Pepin, who has the same rights to claim that bloodline? Or will the heirs of Charles unite and win Christendom together. As an editor, one hears many rumors. Let no one discount her as a member of the "fairer sex"! She is a formidable monarch, strong, skilled with a blade, with a constitution that could perhaps rival even Constans. Nevertheless, she will need to calm the storm in her own teapot first!
Isabel the Pious (at least in name!), how can she make such bold claims to authority? beleaguered as she is by the mountain passes to her north at the Great Caliphate to the south. Until she is able to get a handle on the saracens in her own lands, how can she claim imperial authority over all? Nevertheless one must never fail to note: once she enters a room for negotiations or a battle field for war all eyes turn to her -- and many a heart! Her charms, her grace, her deft mind can bend most any conversation and any battle to her will!
But let us not forget mighty Red Catherine! Only recently converted to the Law of Heaven, she fights like a barbarian but prays like a saint! Perhaps that shows the wisdom of her governing. But, so newly converted (but two short years ago she and her Slavs received the holy gift of Baptism!), and so close to the Khanate of Utter Oblivion . . . will anyone take seriously her imperial aspirations? Well, I suppose we ought not hate the new: fresh blood sometimes brings fresh insight, and a new wind blows away old filth!
But how could we forget Pepin the Unstoppable, unstoppable in battle, and, I have heard, unstoppable by drink! Our good prince has only his distant cousin Eleanor to contest his claims to Carolinian empire. Skilled with a bow and mirthful at dance (a not unhandy skill when trying to persuade distant courtiers from more civilized lands!) he is yet a contender! But can he even convert to Law all those of german blood?
And so our greatest monarchs face each other and their own internal problems on the eve of this season of war. While the rest of us simply wonder -- when will they make good their promises to protect us from the Merciless Northmen, the Khanate of Utter Oblivion, the Great Caliphate and worse: those Unutterable Atlantans! Perhaps those are the worse. Or perhaps most to be feared are those horrors which haunt us from time to time rising up unexpectedly from those unconquered fay-wilds: the fell forests of Dun Kells!

Emperor Constans chose not to engage in war this season. His motivations remain as inscrutable as the empire itself, but it seems that Georgia remains in rebellion against his imperial claim.

Let it hereby be announced, in all the lands that give all praise and glory to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, He who shed precious blood for us 'pon Cavalry at the cross that we might yet enter the heavenly kingdom undeserved,
Know this, and rejoice, all ye good Christian souls, that His blessings have been received by His people Gallica in ways most mighty, as we met the savage rebellious hosts in Aquitaine and did give them battle.

The long summer past, the autumnal light begins its slow decline as we pass on our journey to yet another season of war among our "peaceful" estates of Christendom.
This past spring most monarchs spent their resources putting out their own fires. With many kingdoms now united under one banner, what will the future hold? I dare say I suspect we may see battle between siblings as the leaves begin to fall.
Constans, the young Emperor of Byzantia, seems bent on pursuing a path of peace. How true to his actual calling. But will he be able to hold this course with those who border him? With the all of the monarchs save himself finding unity and peace at home, I have no doubt that he will find some knocking at his own door this coming season.
So here is to peace as we inaugurate our season of war. And who knows what "guests" may arrive for all our monarchs. Those few who have seen the Unutterable Atlantans have little mind left with which to tell the tale. Should they arrive on our western shores in their mysterious iron-clad vessels I fear we will have more to worry than who will win the imperial claim.

The dogs of war shall no more roam the realms of Gallica, as the Germanic legions will not pursue this westward campaign, leaving the people of your fair realms in peace to rebuild, repair and recover. The vagaries of war have granted us a new and different political landscape as we gear up for the next season of war after the long dark peace of winter.
Constans the great has fallen in to inanity, his eastern most estates in continuing rebellion and the Germanic heir of Charles the Great taking hold of Italia instead.
Logres and Slavia clashed at sea but to no avail and much carnage.
Isabel has proved her mettle as a lawful warrioress, putting out the flame of the Unquenchable in single combat!
So here is to peace as we inaugurate our season of war. The great Khan of Xanadu may well be fomenting an attack from Asiatic lands. Should they arrive on our eastern flanks in their full archery and cavalry assault, I fear we will have more to worry than who will conquer Christendom from within.
