I'm going to need a list of dramatis personae, right soon now. I need to know who the Player Characters are and in what roles, so I can fill in NPC's as needed. Some might be spear carriers, but others like Joe Hinkle could have major supporting character roles. Charlie Lin: Ship Captain, B49987, 38, 5 terms Admin-1, Computer-1, Navigation-4, Forgery-2, Shotgun-1, Streetwise-1, Vacc Suit-1 40 Kcr, Auto Pistol, 1 Share of Clear Sails Eric Marston: Potential Senior Boarding NCO, Sergeant Major (retired) Marine Commandos, 987B9C, 38, 5 terms Gun Combat-4, Demolitions-2, Heavy Weapons-2, Instruction-2, Recon-2, Vacc Suit-2, Wilderness Survival-2, Zero G Combat-2, Blade Combat-1, Brawling-1, Gambling-1, Grav Vehicle-1, Leader-1, Recruiting-1, Tactics-1 70 Kcr, Traveller's Aid Society, High Passage, MCUFx2, MCGx1, SEHx2

That is ten characters, anyone not yet chimed in? raikenclw has not logged into the forum in nearly a month, I think that is it, but I am not sure.

Hey all, I will be at Travellercon, leaving tomorrow am, be back online, mondayish. See you then! Eric Is Travellercon the one in Pennsylvania? I'm in Florida so it's too far for a casual visit. I'd have to plan well in advance. Vaccinated or not,I'm still shy about getting in rooms with people. Hopefully, I can actually go Travellercon and/or other cons in the future. I hope you have a fantastic time, Eric. Roll some double 6's for me!

Some might be spear carriers, but others like Joe Hinkle could have major supporting character roles. I'm playing Peng Silva, who is mainly a gunner but also capable of filling other roles (see character synopsis in my post sig). I'm willing to take on playing another character (since most everyone else seems to be playing at least two), but I'm frankly not inspired to create one.

I gave folks a chance to make a ship based and a ground based PC so when the is action in one place but not the other they will have something to do.

I think Peng will be able to keep sufficiently busy. He can fit into either category.

(This is my position on Casca as well, though if it were felt a dedicated lawyer/broker/trader were desirable, I could pull something together. I'm comfortable staying with one.)

I did it AGAIN, dang it! I got lazy and forgot to check the game board for new threads. I'll try to do better in future, but I would really appreciate it if someone could drop a line here when a new thread opens . . . something like, "Hey, raikenclw! Eris has opened a new scene!" would suffice.

Things have turned crazy busy around here, which is weird since I thought I had retired, so Cyril and Bo will be on their own for awhile. They might go into low passage with the prize crews or just stay in AFK Limbo until (probably) February. Meanwhile, if you have a use for them they are at your disposal.

I entered the ICU in a diabetic coma two months ago today and was discharged ten days later. I still get tired very easily and have trouble swallowing {due to the aftereffects of intubation) but I'm otherwise doing okay.

My IC use of the term "tick" just now (in place of "moment"), comes from a set of novels to which I've been listening lately. These are "Quarter Share" and "Half Share," the first two books in the "Trader's Tales from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper" series, written by Nathan Lowell. The series is set about 300 years in the future and concerns the day-to-day life of a commercial freighter crew. The works are quite Travelleresque, although the ship drives in question are different (jump - called translation - is instantaneous and requires no fuel, but transit to/from each jump point - under magnetic solar sail drive - usually takes several weeks).
Anyway . . . .
"Tick" (e.g. the time it takes for the minute indicator of a digital chronometer to tick over to the next increment) equals one minute. "Stan" is short for "standard hour," while "stanyear" is short for "standard year." I think these conventions are a neat way to help indicate a future setting without being cliché about it.

I had a spirited conversation with Nathan (I know him and have met him IRL) about that. Thank you for avoiding spoilers! I suspect that by the end of the series Ishmael (central protagonist of the first two books) will rise to command his own Solar Clipper. But if he doesn't, there had better be a good reason! One minor edit that I would have made: the author should have explicated that - since the destination trading stations are normally deep in each system's gravity well (in orbit about the usual habitable mainworld in said system's Goldilocks Zone), the solar sails are accelerating the Clippers on each outbound leg then decelerating them on the subsequent inbound leg. Although I'm not a math person, I know enough about orbital dynamics (thanks to CT) that I realized this from his general descriptions, but other readers may not. The author had a perfect opportunity to mention this when he had Ishmael think about Lois' one oddball destination, where the trading station was located only eight days from the jump point (because that system didn't have a Goldilocks mainworld, only scattered asteroid settlements). Ishmael also failed to "think" about Lois having to carry/burn extra propellant or needing to use the gravity of the system's gas giants to decelerate to relative rest with this station (due to insufficient distance/time to use solar sails alone). But I suppose that's just nitpicking. P.S. I really like how Ishmael unabashedly thinks/speaks about Lois like she's a real person. All of his friends in the crew regard this as odd behavior, although I suspect that older crew wouldn't be surprised by it at all (Ishmael's friends all appear to be within a few years of his own 18 stans, with only a bare handful of years spent crewing under their various belts).

Just a thought: we're already really slow with the posting and the Christmas/New Years holidays are just around the corner now. I'm looking forward to a resurgence in postings once the turn of the year is past. Yes, let's hope so. To remind (or let those who don't know) everyone, I'm running three other games as well as this one. There's been combat in one and behind the scenes "hanky-panky" in another and "first time using this new software and jump drive" in the other, so they have had more of my attention lately. I've not forgotten Exploring Mantan, but haven't been actively pushing it along, just responding to all of you're posts about the ship...like the ones Peng has been making. I hope to get you aboard your ship and off to adventure soon, but I need y'all to basically sign off on the ship before we do. BTW, I had a mini-adventure planned to acquire a Vargr Laser Rifle, but ateno hasn't seemed interested in the breadcrumbs I've had Josef Hinkle drop...neither have oscar, tophocles or raikenclw, for that matter, to the idea of a ship still, hidey-holes in crawlspaces, or how you might acquire a more capable boat for the ship. Do I have to outright say, "Hey! Who wants to go steal a Vargr Laser Rifle, forge some papers and trade a ship's boat for a g-carrier, set up a food processor/still on the ship, turn some of the wasted space between the inner and outer hull (now that the plates are off) into secret spaces?" <grin>

I'd intended to do that before driving some of those other plots forward. Charlie is kind of laid back but I'd be happy to push on those items and characters a bit.
