OOC: Are the turrets physically accessed from the bridge? If so, the player didn’t know that. In any case, the intruder was at the pilot’s console so he might not catch it. As joertexas helpfully provided to me . . . The Clear Sails deckplans/statsOOC: I didn’t realize. Addressed in character.

OOC: I didn’t realize. Addressed in character. OOO: Maybe if the turret hatch had been open and Peng had been shouting to us on the bridge I’d have realized.

Over on the IC board ("Chase Above ShiraLea"): . . . and tries to make eye contact with Aarav, who seems just as out of place here as he is, but is rolling with it. OOC @ ( Tophocles ): With a fair amount of confusion, Aarav was just trying to help and made a conscious decision about which side on which to intervene, based upon the behavior he observed by both sides (mostly with respect to the treatment of wounded comrades). He also managed, through sheer luck, to get in a bit less awkward kerfluffle with one of the crew than happened to be the case for Casca. He was also at the starport looking for what would be next in his little, personal adventure, after having had a less than successful post-muster-out turn as hired crew on a free trader. So, now that things have calmed down a bit, at least in terms of his own immediate circumstances with respect to these new folks, he is "rolling with it." But that's a product of luck, genuine desire to be helpful (and a well-developed sense of "right and wrong"), and a basic, though happenstance, apparent alignment of interests.

Thanks. It's not clear to me reading the thread whether we are prisoners or not. I'm going to post something that I hope will help clarify that.

Excuse me, that's Corsair to humans that don't know the difference... ateno , in your post upthread this site's quirky quote nesting appears to have credited ME with something our Referee actually posted. In addition, please note that said "quirky" function has deleted everything erisred wrote in my above quote of *your* quote. The first time I ran into this it seriously annoyed me. But I've since learned to live with it. This instance could be my fault. I have a habit of trimming my posts, so I quoted and trimmed, it seems the forum program behind the screen or I left it pointing somewhere it should not have. I'll only trim in the balloon from now on. Eric

It's not clear to me reading the thread whether we are prisoners or not. In the last Traveller game I played in, some months back now, my one-term pirate character started out as a lone (Human) slave on a Vargr corsair that was secretly--even as far as many of the Vargr crew understood--under command of a couple of Zhodani intendants.
It could be that I'm (inappropriately) allowing Aarav to take a bit of advantage here of the patience and tolerance for relative mistreatment my other character learned from that experience.

(Still learning the ins-and-outs of manipulating the BBCode too.)

Players have game knowledge the characters do not. We as players know that we have to work together; well, not "have to" but should want to. I have no interest in playing a game where characters are fighting and snarking with each other all the time. That's what real life is for. Will there be growth pains, as new players come on board? Of course. As a new player, I am looking for signs that we are going to work together to tell a fun story.

No PC has ever fought or argued with another PC in this game. Ever. All I'm asking you to do is to walk your character to the bridge, where there are other players you can interact with. That isn't an unreasonable request, especially under the circumstances - which have been described and explained very clearly. When people stop shooting at us, and we aren't running for our lives, then we can all sit down and talk. Until then, I'd appreciate a little patience and cooperation, as would Tokheletoi.

The new characters have only been exposed to the older ones in a high stress combat situation where there isn’t time to figure out who is who. Once the shooting stops, there will be the chance to temper any initial misunderstandings. We’ll work it out

I'm trying to be patient; trying to cooperate; trying to play the game. For now, I (as a player) will "walk [my] character to the bridge", as you instruct, if that remains an option in the IC. You can decide if it is as a captive or as a potential ally. Or (as you have posted) you can lock him in a room and I will wait.

Over on the IC board: Tokheletoi looks at each of the people as they speak. Her ears flatten as she chuffs in annoyance. "Allow me to - briefly - summarize. You are all aboard this ship without an invitation." This is not exactly true. We appeared to have been invited aboard here and here.
And surely the new old folks must understand how . . . silly the complaint that "there's too much going on now to make a good decision" sounds to players who recently had to sort out a much more complex situation just to jump into the game!
(Indeed, Toph was even criticized OOC by one of the new old folks for making what seemed to his critic to be poor role-playing choices then!)
I get it that the old folks' "simple" choices--shoot one or more of us newcomers, lock us up somewhere--are easier than were the "simple" choices for the new folks a while back--stand by and not get involved--but it does seem like there's a bit more room to "play" with the new folks here.

I'm playing my character. She wasn't a party to any of the conversations you quoted, and she's a quite literal and organized person. She's also pretty clear on her role and responsibility as a fractional owner and as a crewmember. All of the newcomers are literally aliens to her, so she has little experience with reading strangers' non-verbal cues, and equally limited experience with the language. You can characterize my/her actions however you'd like - I've given my reasoning for them, and I stand by what I've posted. All I ask is that y'all please, please, please, please, please --- give it a rest until the pirate ship stops shooting at us.

Sounds an awful lot like the situation I faced when my character jumped into the game--except he had no idea if he had any friends and had entirely no insight into the confrontation in front of him. From that perspective, the challenges faced now by the Sails' crew seem pretty simple.

This comments seems sort of like this: We're sitting around the gaming table. The Ref has taken a break to go to the washroom. And you're telling the new PCs to "give it a rest" while we wait for the Ref to return and resolve the situation the old PCs are grappling with. But, actually, dealing with the new PCs is part of the situation the old PCs are grappling with.
I've tried carefully not to be intentionally obnoxious but I've also not been willing to have my character just sit by in "NPC mode" while we wait for the old PCs to resolve this bit of fun. Sorry.

Our challenges are straightforward, but far from simple. Honestly, it's the lack of clarity that is preventing us from all coming together. Once the shooting stops, that can be sorted.

The old PCs are grappling with the situation. At this point, the new PCs are not even crew members. If you're expecting open arms at this point, that doesn't seem realistic. We're bending to help make this work, too. It will be sorted but we're not letting strangers (two of who have committed less than friendly acts on crew members, remember (though one was an NPC at the time, so one more thing to blame on Eris) ) just waltz in in the middle of a fight for our lives and our ship. We will work it out, but it won't happen while the shooting is taking place. As a player, I don't like being in this position, but here we are. We will sort it out. Hopefully without getting into ANOTHER fight while one is going on. And if we were sitting around the gaming table face to face, that wouldn't change Charlie's actions one little bit, even if we all had known one another for decades. Charlie is doing what's right for him and, he believes, the ship and his crewmates.

Aarav is not at all expecting to be welcomed easily, but he has made repeated efforts already to try to establish some trust. Perhaps they've not been noticed given the chaos around all the PCs, that's cool too.
What I don't quite understand are the OOC complaints that the new PCs should be willing to act in accord with their players' OOC knowledge and sort of "stand by" while the immediate IC action gets resolved.
That seems like we're being asked to role-play poorly, like our PCs should temporarily become "NPCs" until the opportunity presents itself for a slow-paced kumbayah moment.
Sorry, not going to do that.

The PCs should all roleplay as the feel best for their characters. I'm talking to the players. The characters will do what feels right and the chips will fall where they may. Rock on.

All of the newcomers are literally aliens to her, so she has little experience with reading strangers' non-verbal cues, and equally limited experience with the language. Having only interacted with the non-Human members of the crew, this has been Aarav's experience too.
In fact, he has interacted with more non-Humans in the last ten minutes than he had in the entirety of his lifetime up to this point! He can't decide whether he's fascinated . . . or terrified.

I'll only trim in the balloon from now on. Eric I trim my posts as well. I mostly do this so I only keep the bits to which my PC is actually responding. In doing so, I have found that the most accurate way (at least for me) is to click on the "BBCode" tab at the bottom of the "Create Post" screen. This allows me to see exactly where each quote begins and ends. Even so, I still mess up every once in a while, especially if posting with less-than-adequate sleep behind me.

The old PCs are grappling with the situation . . . Peng isn't! My PC is cheerfully ignorant of all these confused tensions, as he went straight to his turret and - per eris's strikeover edit - apparently couldn't see most (if any) of the Tarmac Turmoil. [I'm still a bit fuzzy about that, actually. Peng would have run for the turret with the best arc of fire toward the confrontation, yet he ended up not having the actual pirate ship in sight. This implies that the pirates had to run across BOTH turret's arcs of fire to reach their ship, which doesn't seem to match how fast they made it there. But maybe Peng was so stressed out that he got turned around when he reached the bridge and so manned the wrong turret? < sigh > A map sure would have been nice.] So far as Peng knows, Sand Slinger (who he's pretty sure is the same individual as Escaped Vargr) is the only non-authorized individual aboard.

All Peng wants is somebody manning the Port Turret. All his player wants is [in the immortal words of Rodney King]: "Can't we all just get along?"
