Out of curiosity where do the characters in your game/game world stash large amounts of gold? Do you have a banking system? do they bury it?

Under the mattress. Invisibly.* * A no-prize to anyone who gets the reference.

Banking. There were viable banking systems by the 13th century.

In medieval campaigns, wealth is usually consolidated into art objects. Large cities might have private banks, but those are rare and sketchy. Hiding wealth is probably the most common.

Actually, I just talked to this fella I know and he suggests that you invest in an elaborate death trap filled with employees who will take securing your assets very seriously. You should build these tunnels in out of the way places, under abandoned castles, in old spooky graveyards, places like that. And the deeper the better! Now, my guy tells me that the initial investment can be pretty steep, but you get what you pay for. The more devious your traps and the happier your employees are, the greater the return. By using the right marketing strategy, you can turn raiders into investors and just watch your capital grow!

Banking. There were viable banking systems by the 13th century. They weren't modern fractional reserve banks though, even in Italy. If I include a bank at all, its more of a security deposit box system. The fee is 10gp per month to keep money there. More likely, you'll just have hire guards/henchmen yourself to watch over it, and hope you picked honest and loyal ones who are competent enough to protect it.

Most of my characters never got their hands on enough gold to worry about storing it anywhere. In that, we shared a commonality.
Some say it's because I had ruthless GMs. I say, you'd be pretty rotten without Ruth too.

This is fantasy, not history. If you want the convenience of modern banking so you can store your loot... *shrug*.

Spend it or convert to precious gems, easy to carry. Get a bag of holding if possible to carry gems and coins in.
