What type of literature do you prefer? Which type of play do you prefer? Beautiful landscapes, noble heroes and fair maidens or do you like rough landscapes, desolation, dark, grim and gritty? Lots of magic, little magic or in the middle. Expand upon what you like. You can vote for multiple options above.

High at campaign level, s&s at play level.

I prefer a mixture of two or three depending on my vision for a campaign. I am partial to all three styles and all three types of literature.

I will tailor a game to fit the group I'm playing, which typically either straight high fantasy or straight Hollywood sword & sorcery. Even then, I can't help but mix it around a bit. A small bit of weird fantasy or Tolkien medievalism will always creep in there as I'm running things on the fly. My impression is that it ends up being fairly effective, too. I've never seen players cower from a monster so fast as when it comes crashing out of another genre at them. Sometimes those sidetracks derail the theme completely and we never quite make it back to where we started.
My latest group was firmly grounded in high fantasy, but all of the magic items I picked out of Lovecraftian sourcebooks (upshot: they don't trust magic items anymore). Eventually they went apirating and crawled through the Isle of Dread, where we temporarily slipped into Lost World, King Kong and Treasure Island territory. At one point they took refuge in an ancient silver tower, which locked them inside and erupted out of the earth in a cloud of flame. Now they're flying through outer space.

I like most types of fiction, except I don't care for the occult or vulgar perversity. Cthulhu yes, The Omen no.

I like a bit of everything - Sword & Sorcery, Urban Fantasy, High Fantasy & Arcanepunk (a variant on High Fantasy - think Eberron & Iron Kingdoms). I also like Sword & Planet but have yet to play it or mix it into my settings.

A mix of all of the above and more. I don't limit myself to the three genres listed.

As ditto'd above, obscenity is right out. Add Harlequin Romances and I think we're covered. Oddly, I have a great weakness for bad 19th century literature. I blame Snoopy.

In regards a question somebody else asked but I can't find it so I'm answering to and through you: I was referring to the subject title of "High Fantasy vs "Sword & Sorcery." Where would one place "Silly Fantasy," for instance, if not a separate category? Fantasy Detective? Bullets & Ballots in Great Honk?

Cool an easy question, it goes under "other" that nice little catchall for everything the OP didn't think of, at least that is what I use it for when I do a poll.

Ha! I didn't see the poll chart when using my ASCII program for reading websites with Too Tiny Font on phone or tablet. Maybe I saw it later and forgot? (Amnesia is a terrible thing to waste.)

My votes for running a game were: high fantasy (mythological [Glorantha]), sword and planet (I think Arduin, and EPT), and then post apocalyptic (Metamorphosis Alpha, Morrow Project, misc.). My votes for reading were: is it well written (usually Sci-fi, some fantasy).

I voted for the last option, as my game is broader based than just the first three choices.

A mix with a lot of 2 and 3 along with a little of 1. And a little of Sword and Sandal, which you left out. I think these authors are Sword and Sandal Fritz Leiber Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser some of Edgar Rice Burroughs Pellucidar Some of S.M. Stirling (Nantucket Series) C.L. Moore -Jirel of Joiry Robert E Howard Bran Mak Morn: The Last King John Norman and the first few Gor books A lot of historical fiction would be Sword and Sandal, but I don't read much of that. Alternate history of the time period 6000 BC to about 1000 AD would be Sword and Sandal. Greek and Roman mythology are mostly Sword and Sandal. A lot of movies and some TV that are Sword and Sandal See Wikipedia Sword-and-sandal
