Without adding in Greyhawk or any other supplements when creating new attack spells do you use the current spell list as a model? Say allowing only direct damage spells as 3rd level or higher? Do you use fireball/lighting bolt as any sort of guideline? With GH you had the addition of magic missile which basically put direct damage at first level.
What is your approach to direct attack spells created by you as the referee or a player? Do you restrict direct damage spells to 3rd level or higher?
I was tossing around the idea of lower level spells but less effective sort of a build up to 3rd (ignoring MM as if the spell was never created).
for example:
1st level Motes of Fire -- this spell creates a small dart of fire that inflicts 1 point of damage and has a 2 in 6 chance of causing flammable items (cloth, oil, dry wood, etc.) to ignite. The caster can create one mote per level.
2nd level Jet of Flame - this spell creates a jet of flame that leaps from the casters hand striking a target causing 1d6 points of damage.

I think starting with a clean slate and building a completely new spell list could be a lot of fun and really freshen up the game for long time players.

The thought hit me as I was going through some old dragon magazines from the cd archive and it mentioned spell creation using the current list as a guide, of course it was geared toward AD&D spell list. And we know that game is completely different not compatible at all.

It would be a lot of work to get a decent set even of first-level spells together, but 1) new players wouldn't know the difference 2) I bet players new and old would come up with things to do with them that the DM would never have anticipated. Maybe this should be a thread, Mighty Darci? There was one a while ago, maybe from Admin Pete, about keeping spell names but re-programming the whole function of the spell. I don't remember seeing anything like total spell replacement on here, but maybe I missed it.
