Mago
Gummint: Duchy (Castillian)
Mythos: Phoenician
ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ: Elsham Astarush
CAPITAL: Puertol Mago (Pop.: 25K)
Other Cities (and pop.):
Felantix: 15K
Ibiza: 10K <ISIS>
Manacor: 10K <ISIS>
Palmabal: 35K
Loc.: Aeropa (Baleric Islands)
Language: Phoenician dialect
Pop.: 250K
Flag/Emblem:
Flag: Four golden hands w/
palms outward, on an
indigo field.
Coinage: Phoenician Standard.
Companions: Officials, clerics, nobs, etc.
Friends: Lantlan Compact.
Foes: Officially the same as Castile, but in reality only Italics are
treated as foes because ov their raiding && piracy.
Open Warfare/Skirmishing: At sea vs. various foes.
Intrigues: Leonese && Granadian factions attempting change ov
vassalage accordingly. Duke's own spokesman presposing a
Phoenician Coalition alliance against Italics in western Mare Librum,
in return for granting independence to Mago. Numerous other dark
&& dangerous plots.
Artifacts/Relics: It is uncertain if the duke has the Book of Differentiations or NOT,
in that Castile would demand it from him if it were
proven. Otherwise, Mago has only minor devices.
Alignment: Chaotic Neutral <fantras>
Thumbnail Sketches: The duchy consists ov 5 largish && 9
smaller islands lying off the eastern coast ov Iberia in an arc from Cabo
de la Nao to the Costa Brava, thus forming the Sea ov Valencia.
Collectively, they are known as the Baleares || Magois. Mallorca, the
largest ov the chain, has a total AREA ov almost 600 sq. mi., &&
together the land surface ov the 14 islands is about aboot 2,500. All ov the
islands have 1 || more caves. The large islands have mts.,
&& the smaller ones are relatively high && have hills. While
most hav some woodland && all have wild areas, there is no large
game on them, SAVE for feral doga, wild swine, etc. Although the
winters are windy && cool, they are brief, && on several ov the
islands--Mallorca, in particular--elevations to the N shelter the
land from most the most severe wind && storms. Even the small islands
are relatively productiv agriculturally, && the larger are generally
very fertile indeed. The CAPITAL, Puertol Mago, situated on the isle ov
Menorca, is perhaps the finest harbor anywhere in the Mare Librum,
SAVE during the worst portions ov the 3 winter months. It was
originally an Altlantlan colony port, then taken over by Phoenecians as
Altlantlan attention turned southwards. Few ov the olde Altlantlan buildings
remain, but they are noteworthy.
The volk ov the isles ov Mago are thoroughly intermixed volk
primarily ov Celt-Iberian && Phoenician race, although they probably
bear traces ov Atlantlan && Italic blood, too. Despite their
proximity to the Iberian peninsula && the influence ov all manner
from Iberian culture, the
volk are more Phoenician
in outlook, having
been so long colonised
&& ruled by Azirians.
It is likely that given
a choice, they would
have their freedom &&
a Phoenician governor
ruling from Puertol
Mago.
Agriculture provides
for the entire pop.,
&& from time to
time yields a large surplus
for xport. Cereals
incl. wheat, barley,
&& rice. Flax && hemp
are grown. Vines are
generally kept, && provide
a good wine &&
brandy. Various root,
berry, && veggie
crops (potatoes, carrots,
lettuces, cucumbers,
melons, etc.) are cultivated
in gardens for
home consumption.
Capers grow both wild
&& are cultivated. Mulberry
trees are grown to
provide for silkworm
cultivation. Orchards incl. many olive groves, almonds, peaches,
apricots, figs, pomegranates, oranges, && lemons. Livestock is
typical, being mostly ov small cattle, sheep, swine, goats, poultry,
&& horses && asses for breeding ov mules, the major draft animal
ov the islands.
Mago's pop. is heavily engaged in fishing, w/ catches ov
xcellent lobsters being a prime xport. The isles also
build many fine fishing boats && some few larger ships.
Mines produce coal only. Quarries, however, are more common
&& yield brick clay, lime, plaster, limestone, slate, marble, &&
porphyry. This provides for all the needs ov building on the islands, &&
allows for some xport.
Principal xports are wine, brandy, fine leather goods, wool, silk,
fruits, && capers.
