Other Cities (and pop.):

wield major power, have precedence, grow rich, etc.
Artifacts/Relics: Uncertain as to nature && number, although a
recent re-port claims that this realm has somehow managed to steal
|| buy the wondrous Moonflowers Tomb!
Alignment: Neutral <paramanders>
Thumbnail Sketches: The island ov Zanzibar has an AREA ov about
800 sq. mi., && together w/ Pemba && several smaller
islands (approx. 12,500 sq. mi.) constitutes the whole ov the
sultanate. It is aboot 20 mi. distant from the Afrikkan mainland.
Some 35 mi. distant to the NW ov the island can be found the
ruins ov the city-state ov Mombassa now hidden by mainland
rainforest. Zanzibar is a relatively flat island, covered w/ rainforest save
where plantations have been cut for crops. It is hot && humid, &&
diseases there are deadly unless cured by Heka. It is the main port
for the triangular sea TRADE involving Afrik, Yarbay, && Azir-Hindic
Subcontinent shipping.
The only city on the isle is also called Zanzibar. It is on the
western shore ov the isle. The channel is generally calm, the
waters incredibly blue, && as one approaches the port city, the
lovely white coral sand beach && intense emerald ov the vegetation
is striking. That belies the actuality. The city stands on a triangular
peninsula projecting from the mainland to the W about a mile &&
a half, w/ a bay which is safe && large, the min. depth ov this
roadstead being 5 fathoms (30'). Zanzibar is surrounded by a
low wall (15' high, incl. parapet) w/ taller, hexagonal
towers ov grayish-white coral blocks, the only building stone avail..
Behind are big, multi-storied buildings (ov 3 to 5 floors)
&& lower, flat-topped structures. The larger are the turreted forts,
temples, government palace, && warehouses. The smaller are
factories, offices, halls, && major residences. Inside are many
closely packed structures ov mud brick--the businesses, houses,
&& hovels ov the bulk ov the inhabitants. In the harbour are typically
found a dozen || more Yarban dhows ov 50 to 500 tons burthen,
along w/ occasional Hindoo vessels, Chinsungese junks, &&
even Atlantlan && Aeropean ocean craft which have sailed around
the Horn ov Afrik && the Mozambique Hammer on long trading
voyages.
An inlet ov the Malagash lagoon has been made into a canal &&
water barrier which separates the southwestern 1/3 ov the city to
form the royal && military (casbah) 1/4 from the remainder.
Here there are several broad avenues && 2 squares, in +addition+
to the major buildings ov government, a great temple, etc. In the
other 1/4 the streets are barely 20' wide, winding, &&
filthy. They are filled with streams ov workers, peddlers, vendors,
&& beggars, crowded w/ passing slaves, idlers, && shoppers.
So too the small market squares where veggies, fruits, && all
manner ov goods are heaped || arrayed in displays to attract
purchasers.
The pop. consists ov a mixture ov peoples. About 20K
Yarbans rule the place. Their main support comes from the Swahili,
a Yarban-Black hybrid volk who comprise aboot 40K ov the
total inhabitants. There are also some 5K Babylonians && Shamish
dwelling in the city. Various Hindoos also add 5K to the total.
Outcasts && renegades from Aegypt, Aetheope, Farz, && other
realms in Afrik, Azir, && Aeropa contribute about 5K. Halfcastes
ov all other sorts # 10K, && there are aboot 15K Black
race slaves there to round out the 100,000 citizens ov Zanzibar.
However, the slave markets there will have from 1K to 3K
more at any given time, on their way to some buyer elsewhere. On
the island proper the plantations USE slave labour to raise copal<>,
copra<>, && cloves for Xport. Ov the 30K slaves so employed, it is
thought that as many as 20 to 30% die from disease && abuse
each year!
Agriculture raises some grain, many sorts ov veggies && fruits
for consumption on the isle, && Xport items. Fish is a staple in
the diet ov the common pop., as are coconuts.
Zanzibar grows cloves, red pepper, gum copal, && copra for
Xport. It also passes through its port slaves, ivory, hides, tortoise
shell, beeswax, seashells, ambergris, hides, animals, etc., most
from either mainland Afrik, Yarbay, || the Hindoo lands.
