What spells were mentioned in history/fantasy/fairy tales before D&D & Chainmail were published, before the Blackmoor campaign started?
Also old movies from the beginning of fantasy movie up to 1970 and the beginning of Blackmoor.
How many can we list?
How many spells could we add to OD&D that have just been sitting there for the taking?
Note: not looking for spells from "real" magic books like the occult stuff.

My guess is that Wish is the oldest or one of the oldest, it is in a lot of Fairy Tales.

I recall that the old Simbad movies had a fair bit of magical teleporting around.
The Wolfman treated Lycanthropy as a magical curse.
Love potions and Sleeping agents seem to be popular in folklore.

One of the older Welsh Arthurian tales has some of the knights using an invisibility spell. A Clark Ashton Smith story has a Gease as a core story element. Howard has various summoned entities doing the bidding of sorcerers. Enchanted or magical items of all manner feature across world mythologies. Magical circles of protection are relatively common, I know one was used in Three Hearts, Three Lions by Poul Anderson.

I remember seeing the "open sesame" sequence on several cartoons where a magician would open some sort of locked door or secret passage. There must be a serious version of this that the cartoon used as inspiration.
