I'm not discussing any of the politics - real or imaginary - connected to the Star Wars Sequel trilogy when I say that I absolutely hated the sequel trilogy. There were moments that had some potential. The only one I have watched more than once is The Force Awakens. One thing I think they should have done is change the main character. Rather than Rey, I would have built a story around the former Storm Trooper Finn that would have included his desertion and redemption throughout the films. I think it would have been much better to see him start training in the Force and work his way towards becoming a Jedi. I know some will probably disagree but I think that would have been a better take than what we got.

I would have built the whole sequel trilogy around a mature heroic Luke, leading the resistance, becoming ever more powerful, wrestling with being tempted with the dark side, but overcoming it and training up a huge number of young Jedi after Luke's death in the third movie of the sequel trilogy, those young Jedi would have come to the for having been introduced to use over the previous two movies. I would have made about six of dozens of young Jedi prominent in the third movie, Finn could have been one and Rey could have been one. The worst thing was making Luke a spineless whiny coward that ran and hide on a remoted planet. That was unforgiveable.

That not only brings a continuation but includes my idea and Rey in it. That would have been much closer in line with the extended universe novels and that would have been a good thing. Luke's characterization was mind boggling in the sequel trilogy. I can't believe they never included a scene with all of the returning characters together.

Killing off Han Solo was also a big mistake, at least the way they did it.

I was never big on the novels sadly. Seems there was plenty there that could have been adapted and (I think?) at some point many of those were canon. The Thrawn Trilogy for example. It appears Disney adapted that to the Ashoka series rather than approach it as part of the sequels. Having never read Thrawn I've no idea if the original characters (or there descendants) had any direct involvement with him but it seems as plausible a story thread as simply rehashing the original trilogy for a new generation.

Originally, the extended universe novels were "secondary cannon" so anything by Lucas that contradicted them took precedence. Now, they are considered "Legends" and not cannon at all. The original Thrawn trilogy began about 5 years after Return of the Jedi with the book Heir to the Empire. Yeah, it did involve the characters from the original films as well as introducing new characters. I haven't seen the Ahsoka series or read any of the new Thrawn books, but I plan to at some point. I've read the original ones 3 times over the years and have a copy on my bookshelf right now. More information can be found at the Thrawn trilogy wikipedia entry.

I'm just not going to devout the time to read every single one of this massive spectrum of books; much like Dragonlance and others. There are some that caught my interest and some that I just passed on.

I would read and own every single volume!!!!!
