The idea here is simple. I wanted to create something that allowed me to create content for old school games with 2 objectives: [1] Avoid using the OGL with the recent attempts to cancel it by Hasbro. [2] Avoid creating another clone, retro clone, neo clone, or any full game. Surprisingly, I got it down to 2 pages. I'm sure my inspiration for this will be obvious if you read it. I could put it at the end of a document or in an introductory section to explain how to use the stat blocks. I would like some feedback. I know it isn't "perfect" yet - I already see a few things I would change - but if you are so inclined, feel free to give some feedback. It would be highly appreciated. The pdf is below. Classic Era Format v1_3.pdf (95.85 KB)

hengest, muddywater, The Perilous Dreamer, Q Man, and anyone else that may be interested. Here is the update to version 2. I have changed the stat abbreviations to 3 letters and also changed AR to AC. I also ran it through spell check and tightened up some of the language. If I didn't screw anything up, this is the latest version, and updates will be based on this until a hypothetical version 3 is done. Classic Era Format v2_0.pdf (117.98 KB)

This looks like a fine document! Exalt!
What is the "preceding document" referred to?

If you put out something like a small supplement with a town, encounters, and nearby abandoned mine with monsters in it you can include the Classic Era information in an appendix and use it to explain the stats. That's all.

Thanks for your feedback! Yes, I intended that change to monster but I forgot to include it in this one. It will look something similar to Monster:_____________ with that blank space to write in the name of the monster. I didn't catch WAR being used for both Warrior and Warlock - d'oh! I will change that. I wasn't sure what do with Assassin but ASA or ASN should work.

I updated the monster stat block like we talked about above. Version 2.1 is waiting for a final round of edits before I upload it. Something I'm getting ready to add is a blurb in the treasure portion that "treasure" doesn't always have to mean special or magical but could also mean mundane items such as maps, keys, etc.

I expected v2 to hold up a bit longer, but I have moved up to v3.1 of the text. The term "Referee" has replaced "Game Master". The text has been cleaned up throughout. Fixed the duplicate abbreviations in the class list. Classic Era Format v3_0.pdf (117.2 KB)should be the text to make all updates on for the foreseeable future.

This reminds me of JG's Universal RPG reference but in a much simplified/easier to use format. Great tool for making system agnostic and adaptable adventures for our favorite version(s) of the game.
