I know a lot of people complain about it but I liked the idea of the Monstrous Compendium. It seemed like a great idea to have loose leaf pages of monsters that could be arranged in whatever order you wished or removed from the MC for the night to use in your gaming sessions. I understand why people didn't like it; pages could be lost, the binder holes in the pages could be ripped, and you could conceivably spend a lot of time performing upkeep and maintenance on the contents of the binder. Great concept but it was ultimately a letdown for many people. How about you? Did anybody use it? Did anyone else like it?

I worked for a Warrant Officer at my first duty station. He was cool but he would mix it up on people being crappy. Instead of doing pushups, he had people do "TMPM" or Technical Manual Preventive Maintenance. If you got stuck on that, you were going through the folders of technical manuals page by page and putting those little sticky things around the eye holes of every page that needed it. I never got on his bad side.

The Monstrous Compendiums were great at first until you got monsters that took up multiple pages and they would print a monster with a different starting letter that would be out of order. The other thing that sucked about them was being loose leaf pages with no hole protection. The only way to protect the pages was to use sheet protectors. Even more disadvantages! Decent idea and simple. I hadn't thought of that.

If the pages came laminated and the monsters as separate from each other it would have worked. I thought the idea was rather neat considering you'd have to root around in so many different books in 1E to find the monster you were looking for. Great idea! I would have gladly paid a bit more for that MC because it would have been made to last with the lamination.

When it came out lamination was expensive, so it was rather rare to see. Right on!
