I want to use some Arduin monsters in my OD&D world. I use the “alternate combat table”, But I don’t understand how to change over Arduin’s AC into OD&D’s AC. Help?

What are some of the monsters you want to use? I usually just give it what I think fits and don't worry about it. bravewolf and JMiskimen probably can give you more of a specific answer than I can. You might also ask the question in my MeWe Arduin group.

I want to use some Arduin monsters in my OD&D world. I use the “alternate combat table”, But I don’t understand how to change over Arduin’s AC into OD&D’s AC. Help? Answering these questions should help you a bit; 1. What Arduin rules set are you taking the monsters from? [Only AG I, The whole Trilogy, Arduin II (CA or CA reprint)]? 2. Do you have one of the Complete sets (Any set?). 3. If yes look at the Monster's AC (DBF, or AV) and compare it to an armor chart in the rules. Then compare the closest suit of Armor to one similar to an OD&D suit of Armor (Leather to Leather, Chainmail to chain). 3b. If no...Fake it! How tough do you want the ? (Octorilla) in question to be? (Keep number, class, and level of PCs in mind). 4. Go Classic Arduin on them (if you Fake it), there was no Game Balance in Arduin. Running was frequently the best answer to combat. 5. Good Luck, Have Fun, and Please share your experiences and Opinions on this!

I don’t want to fake it. I want to understand how Hargrave intended his AC mechanic to be used with the D&D rules. 4. Game balance is not what I’m after. Just AC. 5. Thanks, I hope that I can.

Arduin's 2+1 is equal to AC 2 with a further penalty of 1 to an attacker's roll to hit in OD&D (After AC 2 all Arduin ACs go 2+ X, where X is subtracted from the attacker roll [like magic armor bonuses]). 4+3 means look at AC 4 in Men & Magic (Chain mail and shield, or Scale mail and shield) and the attacker is penalized a further 3 to their roll (so AC 4 with a modifier of -3, to the Attacker's roll). David Hargrave may have done all of this to avoid legal trouble with TSR (??), or he may have thought it made more sense with the preceding tables in AG I regarding weapons (or missiles) vs. AC(??). bravewolf maybe able to answer this.

Thanks for telling us this, for clarification. 2. That should be enough. 3. Got it. 3b. Okay, you can also DM me here if it's more helpful. 4. Hopefully the above was clear, if not I will give an example. 5. you're welcome, (please let me know if this was clear enough).
