Continuing on with my thoughts on the latest version of The Dark Eye. The Dark Eye: Aventuria Bestiary is a 128 page softcover book. This digest-sized volume is full color throughout and priced at only $14.99. I opted for the three digest-sized softcover books rather than purchasing the single hardcover core rulebook due to how close in price they are in comparison. The Aventuria Bestiary has the following contents. Preface Chapter 1: Monsters Chapter 2: Animals Appendix The posts to follow in this thread will go into detail on the contents of the individual chapters.

The Preface is four pages in length. The opening page gives an overview of the contents of each chapter. There are over 40 new monsters and around two dozen animals. It's pointed out that not every encounter has to end in combat but could also be a chance to interact with and learn about new cultures. The Appendix has new creature abilities and also new advantages and disadvantages for characters. The next page explains the description layout of each monster and animal. The remaining two pages covers new combat special abilities such as Flying Attack, Stomp, and Trample.

The Monsters chapter is 81 pages in length. Each entry is a two-page format - the pages face each other - with each and every monster having a full color illustration to accompany the description. The nearly 40 monsters provide a nice spread of low to high powered entries as well as classic monsters with monsters unique to the world of Aventuria. Some of the classic monsters include a Basilisk, Dragon, Ghoul, and Skeleton. Some of the monsters unique to the world of Aventuria include a Death Squirrel  , Grolm, and a Wolf-Lizard. The Animals chapter is 28 pages in length. As title says, the entries in this chapter are mainly "real world" animals or something equivalent. In contrast to the Monster entries, Animal entries only take up one page each. There are no hard and fast differences between Monsters and Animals as some of it boils down to perception. The Appendix is 8 pages in length. It opens up with a selection of new Advantages & Disadvantages that can be picked during character creation. Next is a short section on new and updated states such as petrified, frenzied, and misfortune. This is followed by a section on quarry and hides, meat, fur, and extracting poison from creatures. Finally, additional rules such as strength for tiny creatures, swarms, diseases, and new information on creature types make up the rest of this section.
