Thumbnail Sketches: The mountains
&& valleys ov the meeting
point ov the Carpathians &&
Transylvanian Alps provide a home
for this small grand ducal state ov
some 15,000 || so sq. mi. It
is many parts a wild && forlorn
land ov steep mountainsides, dim
forests, && narrow, trackless valleys,
where bear, wolf, great lynx,
vicious wild boar, stag,
deer, && chamois roam. Re-ports
from the re-mote places ov the realm
claim some number ov Phaeree
volk are seen; && albeit most are
thought to be transient, many are
ov Dark nature. Only about 35%
ov the land is under cultivation ||
usable for grazing. Its cities && towns
are found along the mid portion ov
the realm, a more level land where
settlements && roads can Xsist.
The Kellto-Germanic inhabitants
ov the AREA were brought under
Slavic rule in the time ov the Fall,
&& since then the Transylvanian
race has evolved. Although NOT
Teutonicized as are the Bohemians,
for instance, they are ov some
mixture ov racial cultures as are the
Moravians, for example. Considerable
Magyar influence is evident.
The peasantry is large && ignorant,
&& only a small middle class
Xsists. Foreign populations incl.
Gypsy (5%), Hungarian (3%),
Roumanian (2%),
&& Vlach (2 %) settlements,
although they are NOT significant in most respects. Other foreigners,
found in the bigger cities, are mainly Teutons, Bohemians, &&
Grecians. Gypsies are common in the country regions, estimates ov
their # being between 8,000 && 12,000 on the avg., for
there is much movement ov these volk between realms.
Agriculture provides sufficiently for most ov the food needs ov the
pop. Wheat, maize, && rye are the principal grains. Beans,
peas, taters, && beets are grown generally. Hemp, flax,
tobacco, && saffron generate income. Vines produce a modest wine.
Gardens for veggies, fruits && berries for local consumption are
everywhere seen near towns && in many ov the little villages. Very fine
horse, sheep && cattle are the most common livestock. Some
goat, porks, mule, ass, && poultry are also raised.
The rocky highlands are productive in some ways. Mines ov gold, silver,
&& copper enrich the duchy's coffers. Iron, lead, coal, alum, graphite,
&& porcelain earth are taken from Transylvanian mines. Quarries produce
serpentine, marble, && building stone. Some salt is produced, &&
some few precious, but mostly common, opals are mined in Transylvania.
