I am fond of using Treasure Chests in my campaign, I think they are tons of fun and I thought I would share some of my treasure chests with all of you.

Room is 15 by 30. From the doorway you can see tables and chairs covered with a very, very thick layer of dust. There are what appears to be some tapestries on the walls and a few book cases. There are little mounds of dust here and there, but you don't know what is under them. At the far end of the room by the dim light from your torches you see what might be a large mirror covered with dust and cobwebs. In front of what may be a mirror are two large statues holding large spears and also heavily covered with dust. Between the two statues is a large mound about five feet high with a very, very thick layer of just covering it.
What do you do?
See next posts for what the referee knows.

What the referee knows ( created on the fly while describing the room):
1. The two 8 by 8 foot tapestries are interactive between this world and some other world depicted on the tapestries. They will be activated if the dust is cleaned off of them. Players can step into them or monsters/NPCs can come out of them, if there eyes are met.
2. If the dust is disturbed, it will create a large choking cloud of dust. Encountering the flame from a torch, will create an explosion that will do 5d6 to everyone present.
3. The mirror if cleaned is a portal that will connect randomly with other places, some of this world and some of other worlds. Cleaning the mirror will activate its powers and there is a 25% chance per turn that PCs can be drawn into it and a 25% chance per turn that something on the other side will be attracted once the mirror is cleaned.
4. The mound is a treasure chest covered with dust. If the dust is removed the two statues will come to life and attack with the spears. They are AC 4, with 60 HP each and attack as 10 HD monsters.
5. The treasure chest is locked, but can be pried open by starting it with a knife blade and then inserting a crowbar and popping the lock. Or you may attempt to pick the lock and there is a 75% chance per attempt that you will fall afoul of one or more of the four poison needles. There are four different poisons and you will need to save versus poison for each. Roll 1d4 to see how many saving throws you need to make.
6. Once the treasure chest is open you will find:

6. Once the treasure chest is open you will find:
When you open the treasure chest you will see a soft yellow cloth covering the whole top of the chest below the lid. The treasure chest is 4.5 feet high plus a couple of inches for the lid. It is five feet long and two feet wide. It is fully made out of wood similar to mahogany and under the dust it is highly polished.
If you use detect magic the cloth does detect as magic. (in each case the cloth must separated from everything else in order to clearly be detected as magic in and of themselves)
Beneath the yellow cloth, you will find six glass cubes and at the center of each is a diamond in a setting on a heavy flat base. All of this is sitting in a wooden tray of a fragrant wood similar to cedar. Note that all items on these trays are placed on a soft, but bright white cloth. This cloth is also magical.
Removing the tray you see a soft green cloth, if checked it will detect as magic.
Beneath green cloth, you will find three exquisitely designed daggers adorned with gold and numerous gems which you do not recognize. The daggers are not magical.
When you remove the tray these are sitting in you will see...

Removing the tray you see a soft red cloth, if checked it will detect as magic.
Underneath the red cloth, you will see eight (8) one foot long rods of a very hard substance, it will not be clear if this is metal, wood or something else. It is actually a magical construct that exists partly in this world and partly in other dimensions.
They will detect as magical and if the PCs play around with them that will eventually figure out how to lock them together in an eight foot pole. Further experimentation can lead them to discover many other things the rods can do. It can move like a snake, fall limp like a soft rope or stand straight up in the air. If climbed, at the top you go "somewhere else."
If the rods are driven halfway into the ground and evenly spaced around a campsite, it will provide protection from evil around the entire perimeter of the camp and this forms a half globe over the entire camp. There is a 1% chance per game week that one of the PCs will try this and accidentally find out this feature.
The rods may do many other things and as the PCs try many different things, they and the referee may discover some of those things.
Removing the tray you see a soft orange cloth, if checked it will detect as magic.

Removing the tray you see a soft orange cloth, if checked it will detect as magic.
Beneath the orange cloth are five scrolls. Three are magical and two are clerical. Roll 1d8 for the number of spells on each and then roll for each spell.
Removing the tray you see a soft blue cloth, if checked it will detect as magic.
Beneath the blue cloth you will find 10 large Platinum coins weighing in at over two pounds each. A normal sized coin runs typically 200 coins to the pound.
Removing the tray you see a soft royal purple cloth, if checked it will detect as magic.
Beneath the royal purple cloth you will find a sword. On being exposed the sword will float into the air and examine each member of the party. If it finds someone to its liking, it will over itself hilt first to that individual. If it does not find anyone to its liking it will 50% attack or 50% disappear.
If it offers itself to someone, then they and they alone will be made aware through telepathy of its powers and its purpose. As noted if no one aligns with its purpose or can potentially be swayed to its purpose, it will deem the party to be evil and will attack.
On choosing someone, it will immediately drain one level from that PC and it will gain a new ability or an existing ability will be enhanced. Going forward half of all XP earned will accrue to the sword and at each level gained it will gain a new ability or an existing ability will be enhanced. There will be nothing else below this last tray.

I would be very happy to see anything else you want to post in this forum, your material has a feel that I cannot achieve, a kind of basic fantasy feel that is immediately readable but is also different, creative, freewheeling, cool.

Thank you! hengest, you and The Semi-Retired Gamer and mao can do things and create a feel that I cannot do, we each have our own unique style. What we do is colored by our personal backgrounds, our personalities, our ages and all we have read and seen. I think one thing that is different for me is that I grew up in a family where the generation before me all grew up with no TV, phones, radios, electric or running water. Most of them were at least teens before they had access to old vacuum tube radios. We got running water and a TV the summer after I turned 7. So I think I am just closer to the old ways is part of it.
