Thanks to this post by mao, I thought it would be a good idea to have a multigenerational gaming thread. I thought it might be interesting to hear stories about gaming knowledge being transferred in these ways: - within families (parents teaches child or older sibling teaches younger sibling, also grandparent refs for grandchildren or grandchildren's friends)
- older friend teaches younger friend or friend of younger sibling
- adult ref has young person at the game table with all adults, letting young person just be in the game like everyone else
- and so on.
My closest thing like this is that I was "taught" to play (in a strange way, but still) by a kid probably a year or two years older than me when we were both confined to the "bench" at recess. At the time a year or two sounded like a really big gap. A year was one thing, but the kids two years older were practically elderly.
The thing about this bench situation was that being "benched" was a punishment not only for breaking windows on purpose or something, but also for some really trivial offenses, like asking a question of the student in charge when the teacher was out of the room.
So the bench-residents were kids who had committed serious school-crimes and those who had done things that bordered on nothing, or were probably involuntary (dropped something during silent-time).
Also my first time playing AD&D was with people who were at least 15 years older than me. My folks knew them all, so it was not considered strange.

I got a cool story related to this. My first D&D game was at a friend's house with him and his older brother. The true learning began when I told my Uncle David and he said, "Just a second. I'll be right back.". He came back in the room with the AD&D PHB, MM, DMG, Deities & Demigods (with Cthulhu), and the Holmes Basic Set. He gave all of this stuff to me and helped me understand it. Years later, his son had bought the core 3E books and wanted some assistance with his first game. I helped him and a friend play through their first session.
