A long time ago I gave up being a purest on book adaptations. It was the movie "Life Force", it is an adaptation of one of my fav books'Cosmic Vampires'"Don't let the title fool you, the book dellves into a kind of space vampire that feeds on as best as I can describe this, that feds on auras and lifeforces. I have read it 10 or 20 times. The movie is good in it's own right but got turned into a sort of zombie flik .Way too much nudity than I am comfortable with but the adaptation stands on it's own. This is what turned me around. A film adaptation is the vision of the director not the writer of the book. Does this vision stand on it's own? I csme to peace w this and I looked for whats good in an adaptation. There realy is no cause to be a purist, enjoy what you are doing. Your thoughts?

I agree, purism got me nowhere. Now I just want to see a movie that's good on its own, without regard to the original. Or to enjoy what I can in a movie that's imperfect.
Of course, I don't see so many movies these days or read so many books, but basically, that's how I approach it.

Interesting thread. I'm more interested in if the spirit of the original book is maintained rather than a 100% pure adaptation. I think Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are perfect examples of what I'm talking about. I found the Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy to be an amazing adaptation. It wasn't a by the numbers 1:1 strict translation. There are events omitted from the books and book characters mashed together into a single movie character, but it works for me. I've watched them all many times and will continue to do so. The adaptation of The Hobbit failed for me because it felt too much like a trilogy of bad 1980s video game movies that missed the appeal of the original work. I would honestly rather watch the Power Rangers.
I recently watched Life Force in the last few months. I enjoyed it but I'm going to have to track down that book.

I don't want to reveal any spoilers as the book is diferrant I'd be curious of how you could compare the 2. The title is so god awful, it prob stopped the book from being a hit. It is very cerebral and a little slow.I hope you enjoy it.

The Hobbit was only long enough for one movie, but they had to have a trilogy because $$$$$$$.

Definitely, The Space Vampires. Yea, I see that now, that's a little weird, might be part of the cognitive issues I am having . After my coup-day-ta ta, i was able (earlier in the day), to get Ruth a nap, she got a whole hour. Bobby and Ruth slept all the way until 3 am when I woke both of them in an attempt to get to bed but no takers, so they both went back to sleep. And I am on guard duty still. It was so nice and peaceful. I listened to Fanny for like an hour. THey are going to be..... LOL I realize what I have done here and preserved it for posterior. , I ran and checked lot of stuff and I did not find any more errors. I'm going to bed.

Most of the time I prefer books, some of the better movies did not start as books.
