Fantasy Wargaming wiki linkAnyone else have a copy of this? I got one in the mid-1990s and never really read it. Now I take a look and see what it is: a fantasy RPG system in a book that looks more like a novel. The "system" parts look uselessly cumbersome but there is some "source" stuff about medieval European culture that is kind of basic but really not bad. Did anyone see this when it came out or ever try to use it?

I completely missed this on the original release. I wouldn't know anything about it until years later.
One of my friends in the Army had a copy. I borrowed it for a bit and tried to decipher the system. There were some interesting bits included but I just couldn't get around the needlessly complicated methods included in the book. I gave it back to him a short time later.
When I got out of the Army and went back home, I would find the book again at my favorite used bookstore. During that time Gardner's Used Books had a ton of role-playing books in their store until they discovered Ebay/Amazon would get them better prices. I would always end up buying something else because the selection was so good. Eventually, the two copies they had were sold and I have yet to see it on the shelves again.

Well, the only thing I have to say about this book (which I have only skimmed) is that there's a lot of material that really pushes reliance on primary sources. And then there's material that looks (to me) like an over-fiddly system that I might pull something from, but wouldn't really want to try to play. However, here's an interesting blog post by Mike Monaco about FW. This post seems most worthwhile to me, not only because it contains a lot about FW, but just for the general atmosphere and information about that time (late 70s) in part of the anglophone world. This bit is of interest to me: The book does look like it was written with thought and care, and I hope someone around here will have something to say about it! Kind of an interesting idea that I can't think of another instance of...a single volume that contains a system as well as a lot of information about primary courses...

I have a couple of copies both the bigger tome and a digest sized version. I know on some other forums there are fans of this game who have made efforts to streamline the rules system. Chuckled a bit when the Bestiary listed God's stats with nothing but question marks LOL

I paged through it decades ago, it was WAY too cumbersome. I preferred Chivalry & Sorcery 3e of the mid 90s, though I never used it.

I received my copy of Fantasy Wargaming on Monday of this week. Thanks, hengest! I haven't had much free time since Monday to give it a good browsing but I will this weekend. I've always wanted a copy so I appreciate this opportunity to investigate it further.
