Just posted my experience about Wednesday's game in a facebook group for "oldschool TSR games" and mentioned playing od&d and describing how the party left the dungeon/castle with a party member suffering from a "broken neck". Among the positive reactions was a person telling me that "there are no broken necks in oD&D" and replies like "you can enjoy your homebrew but if you wander too far from od&d you're not playing od&d". Serously? That is what this hobby needs less of; gatekeepers telling others that their game isn't "pure' enough to call it od&d or old school or real AD&D.

I actually laughed at this. Last I checked, there was no rule for fun either, better make sure there's none of that in your game.

I asked him were the cut-off between od&d and not-od&d was; 'magic missile', d8 hitdie for FM, thieves, Tekumel, Gary Gygax's houserules, Dungeoneer articles? Such nonsense.

Wow, if someone saying, "there are no broken necks in oD&D" and "you can enjoy your homebrew but if you wander too far from od&d you're not playing od&d" are the "positive" reactions, please give me a link I want to read this. My D&D account on Facebook is www.facebook.com/Halenar.Frosthelm.The.Perilous.Dreamer/ and my group there, albeit small since I am seldom there is www.facebook.com/groups/The.Ruins.of.Murkhill. You (all of you) are welcome to join. BtB and OD&D are at the opposite ends of the spectrum. OD&D tells you up front, to make this game your own. Please post your experience here, we would love to read as much as you can remember about how the game went.

Very much, absolute nonsense! Besides everyone knows what the cutoff is. The open secret is "Ascending Armor Class."

I probably phrased it wrong; there were quite some positive reactions but then there was also this reaction. The group is "https://www.facebook.com/groups/392463727462667" and does have many positive and useful posts.
