I'm excited! (see subject)
Been printing of ref sheets and character sheets and such. I'm going to run the module "Castle Xyntillan" with a hybrid of original D&D, house rules and stuff grabbed from a myriad of retro-clones.
From the FLGS Discord channel I already got a message from someone that never played D&D at all. I can't think of a better edition to start playing D&D.

5 players, 2 had never played, 1 who played an introduction gamebox versions once (she didn't know which edition), 1 who only played 5e before and someone that started in 1978.
It was a session 0 with character creation (1 fighting lady, 1 cleric and 3 wizards) introductions, hirelings hiring and setting up and a short, but very succesful, expedition.
I ran Castle Xyntillan (a sprawling mix between Tegel manor and castle Amber) and gave them a fetch quest (find scepter in throne room). They managed to avoid dangers, decide not to disurb stuff they didn't understand, left monsters that didn't bother them and made analmost bee-line to the throne room.
Escaped with a wizard with a broken neck and 5500gp in easily portable loot. Cleric made 2nd level.

I am wondering why so many peeps picked wiz?

I am wondering why so many peeps picked wiz? Hope everything will go better for you soon. The backstories are still a bit vague for me the first session was a session 0 with explaining everything (for some this was their first table top RPG ever), character creations, equipping, hireling and a successful expedition in less than 4 hours. I told them to roll their ability scores (3d6 in order, allowing them to swap 2 scores to fit a class they wanted to play) and asked them to interpret the numbers and visualize a character. The "veteran" made a wizard that was a scholar from Prussia (the campaign is set in a fantasy version of late medieval French Alps) looking for new magic that wasn't in the books of his university, another wizards (totally new player to D&D) is a "rogue elf, Chaotic, that travelled outside the faery realm to discover human magic" and another elf (I think, it was a blur) looking for new magic. They choose the classes before I really explained the rules so I guess they just went with the idea of "yea cool, I can be a wizard" (which is the best reason to be a wizard). I do allow MU's to do little cantrips based on the spells they have memorized. It was fun to see that the new player chose to memorize detect magic as his only spell and in the whole session it was the most useful use of magic. It was refreshing to see D&D newbies at work and they immediately started playing according to the old-school sensibilities. A smithy with an ensorcerelled hammer banging away on an anvil and attacking anyone bothering it: they properly bothered with it, using a 10 foot pole and when the hammer attacked and it destroyed the FW's (Fighting Woman's) shield, I use the shield may be splintered rule. After that they asked whether they could see anything valuable in this room, that or more shields, there wasn't; so they it alone and proceeded and agreed that if it seemed dangerous and not profitable to not freak with it. Apart from the "veteran", who started in 1978 and returned to D&D a few years ago after a few decades, the other players were all early 20s college kids, whose exposure to D&D were the live play YouTube shows and 5e. Meaning I don't buy any of that "current D&D players ruining D&D" pessimism and edition war non-sense; there is nothing wrong with newer editions, but some of these editions (or clusters of editions) are better considered different games, but they're still D&D.

I love it. I have seen a trend to everyone wants to take spell casters, even bitd a third of the group would often be spell casters.
