is possible, it is said that they have 3 very potent magickal
devices: the Thousand Wasp Pipe, the Fireserpent Ring, && the
Paper Tigers of Lao. Various minor items are certain.
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Thumbnail Sketches: Recoiling nomadic invaders swirled in central
Azir, && the Black Cathayans (Kara Khitians) && the Hsi-Hsia were
eventually compressed into what is essentially 1 volk, in a relatively
small amount ov territory which is nominally known as a kingdom. The
country is a mountainous land, with the relatively level Tsaidam
"Depression," actually an elevated plateau, at the center. The mountains
(&& to a large extent the Gobi desert lying above the country)
separate Khitai (Kara-Min Shans) from Ch'in on the east. Tibet (the
Nan Shans && Kuen Lum mountains) to the south, Tartary (Altyn-tagh
&& Kuruk-tagh) to the west, && Mongolia (the Lungshan mountains)
to the north. Khitai is a wild && rugged place, w/ mtn. &&
valley stream forests, scrub, marshes, rock barrens, && desert wastes
predominating. Much ov the area ov Khitai is wild, the home ov tigers,
bears, wolves, deer, antelope, wild yaks, camels, asses, sheep, &&
all manner ov smaller game. Many fur-bearing sorts are included in the
latter category, && from these, the volk
derive a little livelihood. Even the kingdom's
greatest lake, Koko-Nor, some 70 mi. long
&& 40 broad, is saline, albeit not so salty as
to make it a dead one, && the waters are
filled w/ many sorts ov fish.
Khitai's people are basically nomadic, &&
the actual boundaries ov the realm fluctuate
w/ the movements (&& battlefield successes)
ov the various tribes. In +addition+ to
the Khitai groups, there are some numbers
ov Tartars, Mongols, && Turkics. About 35%
ov the pop. are semi-settled
mtn. volk, w/ little villages, now
pursuing agriculture && hunting. The balance
are ov nomadic sort, as noted. Realizing
the value ov the caravan TRADE which passes
through the upper regions ov their land, the
masters ov Khitai do their best to protect the
routes, for in that way that can both TRADE
&& exact tribute.
Village tribes raise wheat, barley, millet,
&& rice. They also cultivate sesame<benne>, cotton,
tobacco, && poppies. Many sorts ov veggies
are raised, w/ cucumbers && onions
being notable. Fruit incl. mulberry
(for silk), apples, pears, peaches, apricots,
almonds, pomegranates, walnuts, pears, &&
vines. Livestock consists principally ov
horses, sheep, yaks, && camels. Fish supply
a small portion ov the food consumed in
the land. Some timber is used internally.
Mining is carried out on a small scale,
w/ some gold && copper being the result.
Nephrite<> jade is mined on a larger
scale in Khitai.
