From: Epic of Aerth Addenda, by Gregg Timm. Hyperborea (pg. 109) It is said that in the arctic north of Pohjola there exists a volcanically heated mountainous country known as Hyperborea. Palms, ferns, bromeliads, and other tropical plants grow in the steamy valleys and animals of Ærth’s Paleocene and Eocene eras wander therein. The forests include tree ferns, cycads, metasequoia, palmetto, and palms; but birch, beech, elm, walnut, and hickory are found on the outer boundaries. Small amounts of barley and wheat are raised here. The southern boundary of this land is the Riphaean Mountains. A human civilization flourishes here as well (about 25,000 folk), ruled by the apparently immortal wizard-priest Abaris who worships Apollo (Greek god). An artifact of great power, the Golden Javelin (imbued with powers of fire, light and healing), is in his possession, and it is said that he is a bitter foe of Louhi. The people are all quite tall, and given to expertise in healing and music (specifically harps, flutes and singing). The sun rises and sets only once a year here in the northernmost areas.

In the wilds of Hyberborea, there are rumors of a demi-lich which rests frozen on a pile of ice. It is dormant, but can be awakened by the presence of adventurers. On awakening, it forms a body of ice, granting it mobility, and, possibly other powers as well. This demi-lich is reputed to live in a vast ice-tomb, filled with creatures of para-elemental Ice. Logically, there may indeed exist one or more gates to the Plane of Ice within this forbidding place. (Thanks: kingofthefreepass)
