Because I like using the "Death or Dismemberment" table when PC's hit 0hp I thought to create a table to use instead of the Save or Die effect of poison in od&d. The table is still pretty deadly but most effects will allow party members a chance to save the poisoned PC's, also it might leave PC's with lingering effects that might need extra healing and/or expenses to cure. Below are the rules for the table:
Poison Effect table:
When poisoned, make a poison/death save; failure means a roll on the poison effect table with 2d6. Success means no effect
General: if the PC survives the poison any effect accrued through the table results, like hp loss and check penalties remain until cured or healed naturally. Effects from multiple rolls on the table are cumulative. At the DM's discretion, a second or later roll on the table resulting in a second "0hp" result might mean immediate death. If the PC "survives" the poison at '0hp' this might require a roll on the "death and dismemberment" table.
2d6 Poison effect
2 Dead
3 Incapacitated at 0hp and dead at the end of the turn. If Neutralize Poison spell or antidote is administered it allows a second save: failure is death, success mean an extra roll on this table.
4-5 Incapacitated at 0hp and at the end of the turn a second save: failure is death, success mean an extra roll on this table.
6-8 Incapacitated at 0hp and at the end an extra roll on this table.
9-10 Conscious but at half current hp and at -2 to all checks, saves and rolls; at the end an extra roll on this table.
11 Conscious but at -2 to all checks, saves and rolls;. At the end of the turn roll a second save; success mean no further results, failure mean and extra an extra roll on this table with a +2 o the roll.
12 No effect yet. At the end of the turn roll a second save; success mean no further results, failure mean and extra an extra roll on this table with a +2 to the roll.
