How do Helmets affect Armor Class? Does Armor come with a Helm or is it a separate item?

IMO new Armor and Magic Armor come with Helms, with used Armor you might end out buying the Helm separately, since the Helm that came with the Armor might have been destroyed and that is why the used Armor is for sale. As for Armor Class, I think most people just ignore Helms for the most part. I have most commonly seen lack of a Helm drop your AC one rank worse. But as I have thought about it, I think it should be more than that and I have looked at it this way. A glancing blow that might have bounced up and hit the Helm a little would instead encounter just your head or neck and find little if any resistance. So I think that lack of a Helm should drop you AC by three ranks worse. So for instance AC 6 would be AC 9 without a Helm and AC 2 would be AC 5 without a Helm. I think that lack of a Helm should be treated as a very serious thing indeed. What do all of you think?

That is a big adjustment, but if you think about it, without a helm your opponents would go for the head.

I was actually thinking of something more than one rank worse in the past, but I always wondered if would be seen as too much. I'd go for 3.

This is a Great subject post The Semi-Retired Gamer! I've been wondering about this myself. I'm torn on the AC mod, but in an abstract system probably 2 easier to hit (never worse than unarmored, so limit that in my head). You have an exalt coming, I think I need to exalt someone else today however!

I consider a helmet as part of the armor and don't count the presence or absence towards AC. I do however use a "Death and Dismemberment" table for when PC's hit 0 hp or lower and some of the results on that table have a more serious consequence when the PC has no helmet.
