Are there any tales from the old days of what anyone did, for some reason having only one of the LBBs to refer to? Has anyone ever heard of this or did anyone here do it?
Absent such tales...what might one have made of the game with only one of the books? Is this a worthy thought-experiment?

I don't recall anyone only having one or two of the three books. It was common for people to have only one or two of the supplements and some people might have had OD&D plus the monster manual and maybe a supplement (usually Greyhawk) and a few people had the Arduin Grimoire. Early on a lot of people bought Chainmail, a few even bought Outdoor Survival.
Yes, it could be a fun thought-experiment.
