I'm tired but wanted to post this before my thoughts left me. If there is a lack of clarity, it is all me. I'm sure most everyone here has heard of the old Kriegsspiel wargaming developed by the Prussian Army. There is a modern movement called the Free Kriegsspiel Revolution (FKR) that emphasizes playing the world rather than playing by a ton of rules. Some have described it as a "proto-rpg" or "proto-D&D so at least some of the posters should be curious about it. For an example, here's a link to Running the first ever 1970s Dungeon Crawl as an FKR game. I've been looking into it and some of the other FKR offerings over the last few days and I'm definitely intrigued by what I see. Darkworm Colt offers several games and I have even jotted down a few ideas about using these concepts in a game of my own. If Discord is your thing, the FKR server is at discord.gg/7r7h3xt. Have any of you tried a FKR game? Have any of you made a FKR game?

Some task resolution mechanics for an FKR-fantasy game I have on the backburner involves rolling 2D6. I'm not quite sure which one I will use yet, but I do like rolling 2D6 for some reason. 1-Highest RollRoll 2D6 to resolve actions. The highest roll wins or succeeds. If you have advantage in a situation then you roll 3D6 and use the two highest rolling dice to get your score. If you have disadvantage in a situation then you roll 3D6 and use the two lowest rolling dice to get your score. 2-SuccessesRoll 2D6 to resolve actions. A roll of 5 or 6 is a success. Compare successes and the highest amount wins or succeeds. Advantage/Disadvantage is handled as above.
I'll post more when I think of it. This is a backburner project and I just wanted to get it out of my head. I find that work better in a creative situation if I have multiple things going on and multiple ideas percolating in my brain. It will be really simple to do classes and the whole project will most likely be in the neighborhood of 6 - 10 pages. For the time being I'm off to take a nap. COVID is draining me. Ideas are coming, though, and as long I'm up for it I'm going to post something. See you after my nap.

To me "Free Kriegsspiel Revolution, emphasizing playing the world rather than playing by a ton of rules" is an apt description of a open ended sandbox OD&D game.

I wish I did, but this is pretty much all I know about FKR. I have two more links to share, True Black Raven: VHS Punk '89 is a post on the Back to the Dungeon blog by eldrad. It's not old school fantasy but it is set in a 1989 with gangs, drug lords, violence, etc. Think something like Reservoir Dogs or Pulp Fiction maybe. It just shows a way you can use the FKR ideas in something a little different. The Neverending Drachenchwanz #1 is the first issue of an FKR fanzine. It is 50 pages and opens up with an editorial defining FKR followed with other content such as an adventure scenario, history, advice, etc. Check it out!

I downloaded the fanzine, will have to find the time to read it. I know the author/editor Norbert online. He is a great guy. eldrad is a great guy too, I am just not as interested in the 1989 thing. But I am sure it is also a good read and will have to take a look at it too.
