As the discussion about prize ships is going on, Captain James Howard and Lt. Commander Clower come back through the door. The talk stops while everyone turns their attention to the two officers. You notice Samantha has not re-entered the room with the two higher ranking officers. Howard looks around "Well, it looks like almost all of you are still here. Does that mean all remaining accept the mission?"Lt Commander Clower starts passing around a comm to each of you, "We will need both your verbal agreement, signature and retina scan to confirm it before we can continue."Once all of that is, done Howard says, "Good! I have more to tell you, but I'll hold that and answer questions you may have about the mission and the ship first."OOC: So, what do you want to know. Charlie and Eric sign. “I’m sure we have a lot of questions about the ship. We’ve batter around some ideas on the kinds of things we’d need to do and the capabilities. I’ll ask one about the mission first. Running a ship, particularly a ship that fights occasionally, is probably expensive. We’ve guessed that recovering cargo and pirate vessels could offset that, I’m curious how this will work. “We could put prize crews in our low berths and replace them with pirate prisoners. Or is there something else you would prefer? Chasing pirates means following the leads, not trading cargo. How will we support ourselves while on mission?”

Peng signs. “We could put prize crews in our low berths and replace them with pirate prisoners. Or is there something else you would prefer? Peng chucks in: "Maybe hire prize crews from among Travellers found along the way? Hmmm. Maybe not. How'd we make sure they take the prize to where it's supposed to go? Travellers bein' a shifty bunch, all in all.""Chasing pirates means following the leads, not trading cargo. How will we support ourselves while on mission?” Peng again: "Can we sell off 'reclaimed' prizes or cargo along the way? If it first needs to be officially reviewed by an Imperial Court, maybe deputize somebody aboard as a Judge or Justice o' tha Peace or Whatever?"

Adam thinks to himself, "Well prizes are not ours to sell those need to be sent back, but the cargo's if we can find out where specific cargo's are going (and where they are from) that may give us some leads to follow and threads to pull on, not the legit cargo's but the illegitimate cargo's."

There are 5 pilots, 5 navigators, and 5 engineers, actually there is some cross training among them so they can fill multiple roles, but in any case, any prizes you recover can be handled by 3 crew. So, you will be able to capture up to five ships during the mission and send them back. These people can also act as replacements in case you take casualties." says Howard, "I suppose you could put captured pirates into free low berths, but I don't think we at Naval Intelligence would bat an eye if you don't take any prisoners. I suppose you could drop them off on worlds out there if you wanted to." "We do expect you to be doing some trading." Howard puts finger quotes around trading, "That is your cover, trading. If you make money at it, it's yours to keep, but no, we don't expect you to cover all your costs from trading. You will have 50,000 credits in Mantan currency when you leave and access to 150,000 more from a banking corporation based on Mantan. This should cover salaries and operational expenses for some time."
Howard refers to his comm pad, " It's the Bank of Mantan, actually. They have branches on many of the worlds of that subsector and we've established an account with them and put the funds in there for you. If you capture prizes and they are delivered back here, they will be sold and the funds from that will be put into that account."
"Other questions?"

"No direct reporting requirements, too much communication between you and us would blow your cover. However there are small Romanian Scout Bases on Elanti, ShiraLea and Bengali. Naval Intelligence has operatives at each of those bases that can get word back to here on Patagonia." says Howard, "The Agents on those worlds will be alerted to your operation and will provide help...very limited help...over and above being a way to get information back here and passing information from here out to you. It would be advisable to stop by those Stations occasionally, but it can't be openly as that would probably also blow your cover."

“ I’m assuming you have significantly more intelligence than we do about the pirate activity in the area. Will Commander Clower be able to share that with us for planning purposes?” Howard nods and looks over at Sam, "Not as much as we'd like to have and very little about what is happening deeper inside the Mantan Subsector. What we do know is a few things." - At least, some of their ships must be capable of Jump 2 as the there are sites that they couldn't have reached with only a J1 fleet.
- The raids into Romanian space seem to come from the arm of the Mantan Main that passes through Ebolar and there are also a cluster of attacks that can be traced back to Lilliput. That's another reason we are sure they have some ships capable of J2 as Lilliput is a J2 away from its nearest neighbors.
- It is pretty clear that there are officials in several local governments that have either be subverted by the Piracy ring, or the governments themselves are wholly in bed with the pirates. One piece of information we would like you to gather is just which ones have been compromised...like on ShiraLea.
- They must have bases that can build, repair, and maintain their ships. Even if you can't take those bases out, letting us know where they are so the Navy could send in a policing squadron for a quick strike would probably break the Ring's back. As far as we know, Mantan and Lilliput are the only worlds in the Mantan sub sector that can build, repair and maintain Starships. We don't have eyes on Lilliput, but we do on Mantan. We haven't picked up any activity in the shipyard on Mantan that leads us to believe they are building or servicing the Pirate Ring's ships. Of course, we know very little about any of the other systems out there, so their could be other worlds with shipyards that we know nothing about.
- The Romanian Empire has a small diplomatic mission on Mantan itself. Mantan, Tyler and Uruguay form a small empire and it doesn't appear than they are directly involved with the Piracy Ring. However, they say they have had no raids or attacks on their ships or worlds, and deny such a Crime Ring even exists. Messages from our Diplomats report that the Mantan government says that if we are experiencing piracy problems that we should look within our own borders not in theirs nor in the independent worlds around them.
Sam sums up with, "The Pirate ships seem to range from converted merchant ships in the 200 to 400 ton range to a few para-military ships...corsairs...in 300 to 400 ton size. That is pretty much all the Intelligence we can provide you at this time."

" I'm sure I'll have more questions, but I don't want to hog the spotlight. Once everyone else has a chance to ask some, I'll definitely be interested in hearing more about the ship. There was some talk before we were alone about how the ship and her gear could best be configured for a Q-Ship antipiracy role. Peng in specific seems to have a grasp on the subject matter that has led to some interesting suggestions."

Eric took the opportunity to lean forward. "We'll probably need some deniable military-grade gear or scavenged and mismatched gear that won't lead back to you while still being easily reparable and serviceable. Nothing that stands out as being odd but advanced enough to get the job done. I won't know what to suggest without knowing what we have and I'm sure that others will have different needs than a commando like me."

Casca signs.
The conversation about prizes is fine, but he doesn't contribute unless asked a direct question. He has made his point about selling Ship boats, and why that might save the legal hassles around registration, and perhaps it's been heard. If not, he'll act on it himself when the time comes, if he can. These starjocks never think of the sublight ships.
With the equipment they're handing out, Casca is willing to take some combat armour, but if there's a high-tech vacc suit, that would be his preference. He's seen those light models, tried one on once at a naval trade show he was once brought to by a Major; it's like wearing only your skin. He's got his own cutlass.

OOC: You can certainly get skin tight vacc suits. They offer hardly any protection from projectiles, radiation, or energy weapons, but you can wear any sort of armor you want over them for protection.
I don't think I have an NPC in the crew at the moment. But I'll toss out a thought from Sam. "Captain Howard as told you that prizes need to be sent back to here where the Navy will sell them and put money into your bank account, but I'd like to add any cargo or loose items...equipment, small craft etc....that you can use, you can keep or otherwise dispose of." says Sam. Howard adds with a shrug, "Or you can leave that stuff on the prizes and we will auction it off and put money into your Bank Account. We just don't want it getting back into the hands of the Crime Ring."

But only if they're no better than what we're usin' ourselves. We keep that sort and sell off the lesser boat we've been usin'. An' o'course we keep any weapons and missiles we come across, if'n they're up to snuf or can be made so without too much trouble. Expendable costs can add up right quick.
He pauses with a thoughtful look on his face, then continues: "How about some remote control surveillance drones? Both small stealthy ones and honkin' big armed ones? Much better if those sorts get shot at, rather then my own tender flesh."

Peng mutters: "So, that's a 'No' on the 'Judge aboard' option, then? Gotcha."Adam is amused that Peng would want another official of the Romanian aboard. OOC: Not quite. Peng was asking if it was possible to deputize someone who's already part of the ship's complement as a Romanian Maritime Judge. Doing this would both save time and also cut down on the potential for a security leak. Peng doubts that the usual prize court bureaucracy - not normally concerned with handling classified activity - will be able to keep connections between the incoming prizes, the bank account concerned and ourselves secure. This is particularly worrisome given that as a rule prize courts (at least in RL history) are notoriously corrupt.

Colonel Berger speaks up and says, "Thank you Sergeant Major Marston for your endorsement for Troop Commander. I am ready to lead in that capacity and with men like the Sergeant Major I am confident that we can do our job. We need to make sure we have the equipment that we need, men with combat experience and transport craft with the legs give us an advantage." He continues, "Are there any objections to my holding that position?"
Captain de Graff says, "I have known Colonel Berger a long time and highly approve of him being our Troop Commander and although I do not know Sergeant Major Marston yet, he and Colonel Berger have a good history and that is good enough for me. Looks like a great team to me."
