Going strictly by the OE rules, as characters there are only Men, Dwarfs, Elves and Hobbits. Greyhawk allows the addition of Half-elves. That said, examination of the original description (M&T) reveals that Gnomes are so close to being Dwarfs, except for being slightly smaller, with longer beards, that it seemed--to me--a shame to exclude them as characters. But rather than just introduce the typical Gnome, a bit of tinkering was in order. One should consider the following: Gnome characters can be Fighting Men, limited as Hobbits to 4th level. They can be thieves (per GH rules; unlimited). They should be allowed access to the original Illusionist class providing they have the ability requisites; limit--7th level. But, mainly, they should be allowed entry to the Druid class (per Eldritch Wizardry); limit--7th level. In addition, one should let them multi-up as FM/T, or I/T, switching between classes adventure to adventure like elves. All class restrictions and penalties should be implemented.
I'm sure someone (somewhere) has suggested something along these lines, but I thought including the idea here, might be helpful.
