So I thought I was going to share my con days. I attended a lot until about 1988 or so when I was 28, most of this is a long time ago , so we will see how much I remember. I have been to one every few years after this and in fact had my greatest victory about 8 years ago, I also had my worst gaming experience In my life the next year at the same con. Stay Tuned.
EDIT: I have just thought of several con fails so I will put them between the good ones

....and the Star Trek Con......
I attended a lot of cons back in the days. Only about 3 of them were not gaming cons.It was about 1988. The weirdest was the only Star Trek convention in The Valley Forge Convention Center in Valley Forge Penn. I went to it with my wife and new born (!st) daughter(although I am Incredibly curious about a con where 3/4 of the attendees think they have been abducted by Aliens........)
Since this was my younger days, I was still a geek(I've out grown(?). The first major event was that I inadvertently stole about 30 posters of a Kingon D6 Warship, but they were just laying there.... It turned out it was a sellers table. In my defense, no one was at the table, no chairs and it was the only thing on the table. Nobody caught me even though I had them blatantly on my daughters stroller top. . Next I ran into a guy that had a creature puppet on his shoulder. It had sticks attached so you could animate him. I looked all over the con 'cause I really wanted one(see, geek?). He Was So Weird! This should have been a clue.
So as we strolled around the dealer's table's , looking for the puppet, OMG!!!!!! These Peeps were So Weird!!!! Up until this point, I had only attended game cons so I was completely unprepared.
WE carefully searched the dealer's area and left very early.
Right before we left, the table with the D6's was open(I'm sure he had the puppet(maybe?)
I have been told that Star Wars Fans are worse
I find that very had to believe.

(Hmmm, best plan? Fav run? Fav game?, I think fav run first)
It was 1986 and I was newly married(notice the kid was a new born in 1988). I went to the con w my oldest nephew in law(man did his parents hate me). He was about 15 It was one of the Atlantic Cons I think, or maybe an Origin, not sure. It was at the Baltimore Convention Center in downtown Baltimore Inner Harbor. That is my all time fav venue , if you ever get the chance the Inner Harbor is really nice(now, except for the crime....) It has an amazing aquarium , the biggest food area I've been to and its been so long since I have been there, I imagine there is a lot more.
This was one of the cons attended by my "Con Best Friend", more on him in a full post.
So it was Saturday night and I was with my nephew. We played every game together and our 8 PM one had been cancelled. We looked in the con book for another game and I spotted one of my old Mysantia players was running "Cthulhu By Candle Light LARP" for 4 players. On a whim we went to see him as I hadn't seen him in several years.
I need to make a point about the way the con was run first. Every single game was overbooked. Luckily I always put my registration in very early so we only got pushed out of the Saturday night game. That is why I have a story about this.
We got to the gaming area and there were peeps Everywhere, more than I could count. I could just barely see Bob was talking to a guy from the con. He had informed Bob that there was nothing he could do and they had overbooked the event by 100! On a whim I said to him"I'll run some of them if you give me prize support", he jumped at it. He asked me how many players I would take and without thought II said"20". Off I went w my 20 players and nephew in tow looking for a place to play, my only flaw in the night.
So we found a large convention room and I set about plotting what we were going to do. On the way over I decided that it would be set on a plane. There were 18 passengers 2 pilots and a stewardess. Wait you say, you said 20 ,that's 21. A local guy came in off the street and just inserted himself. He was a blast. He loved it and fit right in.He came in 2nd playing a black street guy from Baltimore(he was black) that was mercenary best friends w a white Afrikaner best friend/partner. I think the Afrikaner player was good too and they made a great team but he was overshadowed by the Baltimore guy and I barely noticed him.At this point my nephew and I started making up characters as we go around the room, I only remember the ones I identify. This was when my nephew was of the greatest help as he actually did more than I did and we had no idea what the other one had done. This was what happened a lot. To this day I have absolutely no idea what he did during the game, I'll have ask him next time I see him. This was the first time(yes, first) that we got thrown out of our spot. More on that
(not finished, lots of interuptions to nite)

(continued) So I had picked a room that had wargamers playing at about 5 tables. As it was a huge room we all had more than enuf room. The problem was not the area but the volume. 23 LARPes are very loud. They called security who threw us out. As I had said , this was only the first time. there were more of these than I can remember until we ended up in a lage hallway. We were blocking everything and they called the "con cops again" The guy who had promised me prize support came and I told him we were not going to move AGAIN and we would keep to the side and be good,. We wee not bothered again. My players were troopers to a fault and co-operated fully in everything. I can't say enuf good stuff about the group, while I was circulating every single player was having conversation in character. I never would have fun without them, they knew I was trying to help out in a bad situation and were very grateful. My Plan I didn't have a very good one, just that they were on a plane and had something bad in the cargo bay. It was true seat of the pants running . The Perilous Dreamer , You would be proud, lol. As to the events of the game it was mostly just OK . It had a pretty good Call of Cthulhu quantity but it would have been a disaster w/o my fantastic players. So we had the "plane" set up w/ folding chairs against the hallway wall, thank God , I had them on a plane, my best idea of the night due to our scanty accommodations..

(conclusion) The best character I made was the stewardess. I told her that she was completely fearless and never had to make sanity checks(an integral part of Call). She played it professionally and correctly. She was amazing and I gave her the prize(I went with her to the con booth to make sure she got it, but the same guy was there so it was no problem.) Once again I want to say everything about my great players. Oh, I forgot to mention , I had never played a LARP let alone ran one. So the first notable event in the game was when the stewardess went around the plane asking everyone ir they wanted fish or chicken for dinner. There were a few chuckles. Everyone knew instantly(which I had planned on). You know too , the fish was a very bad choice lol. This is when the thing that was most note worthy about the game, what gave it these fond memories, Everyone who had the fish started to lay on the floor and STAY THERE when I told them they wee dead, some for much as an hour and a half. They all just layed there and didn't move an inch.WOW! The rest of the game escapes me but it is a top 10 in my memory.

Now let's look at an epic fail, my worst con experience
It was about 3 years ago. it was March and I was at Princeton University attending the 40 something Princecon. I had so much fun playing my wizard the year before that I decided to play my same char this(wow you should have seen the typo on "this" one, I should have left it lol) year. If I am playing a wizard I often play this one(more on that in 2 dif posts). It was 5 am Sunday morning and the gaming would be over at about 2 pm. My friend and I were waiting for a game to start(at Prince con there is no schedule) when the 18 year old con directer came over to me and asked me if I still had the magic skeleton key I had found. I did , I had unsuccessfully trying to figure out what it did but only thing the spell had done was to tell me how old it was. I had a good plan. I knew of a very easy to use time machine where I was welcome. I used it and went back to 200 and 100 years after it had been used last. Bad rolls , no luck .
So the con director said that he was about to run his last game nd he needed the key back. I said we would play but we were to tired to organize a group, but he said he would gut us players. we waited for 4 hours. No game.
Then something happened to a player(me) that had been coming to the con for 30 years and had won numerous note worthy awards for play. He took the key and made a stupid excuse and took the key after trying very hard to bribe me to give it back to him(he offered me his, unusable, items). We were stunned. Nobody deserves this kind of treatment. I am trying to talk myself into going back, I have been going for 30+ years. I doubt I will
Side Note
About a week ago a friend of mine said he regularly faces age discrimination from the younger players and refs he sees at LARPS. Is this what happened?
(next up an epic fail that was ALL my fault , #2 on my list after above, Stay Tuned)

EPIC FAIL 2 OK IT"S MY FAULT TOTALLY BUT I HAVE A FAIRLY GOOD EXCUSe:
Ok back at Atlaticon, this one was under attended. No idea of year. There often running at cons groups of 6-2 that ran together this one and I had a great relationship as the year before I had come in second place w a rat catcher(WHFR). That all changed with the Star Trek game. I had a lot of bad experiences with the FASA Star Trek System, I owned and ran i, played it a couple of times,t until I switched all my non-fantasy games to GURPS. So I went into play and was told that we would be playing classic Trek RP, then I found out I was McCoy and tried to get Sulu or Chekov but there were only three of us, so it was Kirk, Spock and of course McCoy. I was horrified, I don't even play clerics much. As we started the adventure , we found out that it was a basically medical game. OK, That's a little better. Nope. The game master had done no prep and could not improvise. I got really, really bored. Spock and Kirk had fun stuff to do separably from me in the lab, yes, it was as dull as it sounds. Well run w a better plan, it's a sound idea. Not how he did it.Me
Me getting bored w/ your game is your worst nightmare. I am capable of nearly anything. Oh man did I act up, I had nothing to do but roll dice. To be fair, I don't really remember how hard I tried. My behavior was horrible and unrepeatable, I am very sorry for what I had done but not till long after it was over. All I could see was:boring.
So next time I ran w the group they shut me down completely, mistaking my exuberance for misbehavior. I deserved it. Later that con I ran into a bunch of them sitting down they knew my name and had been discussing me earlier. I was delighted(really ) and all, including me, had a big laugh at my expence.by what followed. They wanted to put "No Bob Peterson" in their event descriptions. I am not joking. The con would not let them, they tried real hard, they compromised w the abbreviation, "NBP". I talked to some of them the next year and everybody was in better cheer, I guess because I laughed. I think that was the last year they ran. Too bad, overall they were pretty good, hope some of them read this, they will recognize my name immediayly, LOL
It must have been when I was younger, but after I no longer did it"competitively". I am MUCH, MUCH, Better. No Matter the dm , I make a get along w the party good guy, mostly wizards, I play a killer wizard.

EPIC FAIL #3 A LITTLE LESS MY FAULT< BUT THERE IS ENUF BLAME TO SHARE(really enjoying the fail stories, but I am going to have to try and remember more)
Ok this will be a short one. we were playing in a tournament that was a group win thing, this was my competitive phase so I am a lot easier to get along with when it is this format. Some how I ended up w / a ranger who was party leader(prob volunteered<more ranger stories to follow>). We had been playing about 20 min. and I was tracking a druid, who was the villain. I followed him to a constructed underground entrance and continues to follow the trail in. We traveled about 200 feet underground to a door. Thief checked for traps found none and I got in the front(my preferred position of all fighter types of mine). I opened the door and the ceiling collapsed. It killed every one but me and left me with 3 HP. I'm really not sure if I was to blame? I was leader and I did a little persuading to go underground , we had no where else to go, I made my tracking roll the Thief made his find traps and let's face it, it's called DUNGEONS and Dragons. I laughed really hard . I still blame myself but I have doubt about my responsibility.
We restarted and for dumb reasons they left me in charge w the ranger. We were later told that if we hadn't died to begin with when we finished the restarted we would have won
What do you think? Was it my fault or not? (I lean still slightly that it was my fault.)

A NOTE ABOUT MY BAD PHASE OF CON GOING>
When I first started going to cons It was 1980 and I was 20. At first it was all fun and games. Then 2-3 years later I entered my competitive phase, that was were I started to go down hill. I started winning and that only made me more about winning. I had opened up an ugly part of me that I had never seen. I even attended a lecture on how to win tournaments. I am not exactly sure how long it lasted but there was no fun all work..Thank God I got over it. Sure every so often the competitive thing comes up, but I have it under control. I def don't win the way I used to but I am having as much fun as when it started.
(next up . How my playing bad at a game got me a free ticket to a con and my tournament fees

And the Paid Con, or how being bad at a game got me a gig.
So I am only a D level competitor at Heroclix(A collectible superhero miniature game)I am an A+ novice, I always beat all the novices and always lose to everyone else. My BFF was ranked very high nationally . I played w him a lot and only win 1 out of 5-8 games. He hatched a scheme. He wanted to pay me to play in competitive "grinders" at a con to help him win prizes. My goal was to throw games if we randomly ended up next to each other. What I figured out there is the best way to do this was to, every game split my forces in half and attack players on either side of me w about half my stuff, worked like a charm.
A "grinder" is a format where about 8 players pay about $20 or so dollars and get 2 sealed boosters, open them and put all of them together. Then you would go around the table and pick out one at a time from the pool. I was not very good at this as I would pick out char I liked or sculpts that I thought were cool instead of picking power, I would not be able to figure this out anyway. I got a huge number of commons and uncommons from doing the same thing after the game. The other players realized that I was not that into the game and left crap they had a lot of for me. I even squealed when I realized that the Batman I was playing was Bruce Wane's father from another universe. When another guy went ahead of me and was going ti take it first, A second unknown guy yelled at him and told him I should have it. I got it.
So I got lots and lots of stuff , play the haphazard way I always play and had a blast, The only thing I had to pay for was food(I def could have weaseled out of that too if I tried). The problem was when we came home. You see another guy was supposed to pay for half of me and split the $100 prize from each game. He was extraordinarily unhappy that I constantly came in last. This was not the arrangement I agreed to. I was supposed to throw the game and I followed my instructions to the letter. I never know if he gave the money to BFF, he is pretty pushy(he;s a trial lawyer) and usually gets his way. Overall it was a tiny thing to me as my contact w Capt. Unhappy was very limited. Over all a great time.

The First One About The "Days Of Knights" people
I have a few stories about this group so I am going to put the background in this one.
Several of the gamer's went in on a store, It is Called Days of Knights. In Newark maybe Wilmington Del. near a large collage(can't remember name) That was a very good store. Their Leader is a man named John Coridin, he is the only person I've met who claims to have won more RP tourneys than me. I have no reason to doubt him. . They actually ran pay-for-pay D&D games and the dms got paid. They ran an invitational con that I was invited to after the story I am about to tell. More on that later. This was at an Origins or Atlanticon in about 1980, well before my competitive streak surfaced. It was about 1980 and I was 20.
So , John had run this game about 20 times. I was given a fighter w 2 RP hooks. The first was that I wasn't EXACTLY a coward but I was a little. The other was that I owned a magic ring that was very powerful and I had no idea what it did.
The first thing is I remember this big fight w guard dogs. I went the other way for the fight and told the other fighters that I wanted to guard the hall, but really ,I didn't want to fight. it was very in char. I waited until 4 of the 6 dogs were dead to help. I think the other char's were told to be suspicious of me. John was delighted.
The next thing I remember is that I really fixated on trying to figure out what the ring did. I tried every thing I could think of, no luck.
Next was the big final scene. A big fight was going on while I approached a throne with a crown on it, Me and the casters were trying to get to it, to no avail. Suddenly It came to me! I knew what the ring did! I said. "I wish that I was seated on the throne wearing the crown". It worked but it was a very bad idea. I went comatose on the throne w the crown on my head I was the first player to figure out what the ring did out of 19 other players. I also was the first player to sit on the throne and wear the crown.tMy RP was flawless. I won. Then a very strange thing happened. One of the other players was arguing that he should have won. John calmly explained why. he was very unhappy .You see he had played w John for the whole con, they knew each other from other years, and he had won all the tourney up till this one. I got an instant dislike to the guy. His name is Ken Ralston and he later became a pro game designer. He also attended the invitational when I had.Unfortunatly, no more Ken stories other than later at the invitational he treated me w respect. I never warmed up to him. Invitational con stories later.

The Story of Monster Con.
I have a lot of stories about Princecon as I have prob attended about 15 of them, I thought I would talk about Monstercon First
It was Princecon 13 and they decided to do all monster pc's. One of the odd things is they only wanted us to be so evil. I WAS A LICHE!!!!!! . So I bumped heads a lot for the first half of the con, when I was a beholder one guy killed me in the first half hour. i died a lot, way more than any other Princecon>and I know they like me.
There were two very notable stories. The first was when we lklled a real life handicapped couple pc's , They were always going off on their own and plotting and plotting, WE WERE EVIL, DO YOU THINK THAT WE WOULD PUT UP W THAT? We absolutely didn't do it because of their real life bodies, one of them was a dragon and under the rules, dragon breath goes first so we ambushed them. I was the Liche and fireballed them and everyone else did some kind of missile weapon. They died pretty much instantly. We discovered that they had hoarded a couple of magic items. Boo hoo. I do feel bad because they always had problems w other players, although this was the first and last time we encountered them. It's a shame they stopped being team players, it just occurred to me that they prob had never felt accepted enuf to be a team player. Ah well.
The other was a particularly funny rant from my fav dm, Bob West. Bob was a local legend, he was so smart and such a talented DM, he had the bad habit of TPKs because you would have to be at your very best. He killed me at my first Princecon, only the second game on Friday night(you played the same char all weekend). I can't remember exactly what was going on., But we monsters were encountering a typical group of PCs. He went off, ooc, "I can just hear what the nonmonster pcs are saying, C'mon Bob! What kind of bull is this! WE are facing a beholder, liche, gnoll, skeletal warrior and a dragon? ! What kind of crap is this? ! We all laffed and laffed. He was a bit older than me and died 3 years ago but this has made me think of the first Princecon I went to , so that's next, after that I will do a montage of Bob West games from Princecon.
