I was diagnosed two weeks ago with malignant melanoma and will be having surgery on Monday morning the 14th of November. As with my prostate cancer, they think they have caught it early and that the chances of successful treatment look very good. It was in a mole that I have had all my life on my right forearm. I have been thinking for a while - a few months - that it was looking a bit different and getting bigger. I decided that it was changing shape a bit and the surface texture to my fingertip had changed. So I obtained a referral to a dermatologist from my family physician and he (the dermatologist) did a biopsy and it came back positive for malignant melanoma and he referred me to a surgeon who is getting me in as quickly as possible. They advised me that the best treatment is to be fast and aggressive with removal. I am nearly 60, but it can occur at much younger ages. Know the symptoms and get yourself checked. Good that they caught it early. And good luck with the surgery; being a melanoma in a mole, it will likely be a local thing and not too involved. I have a few years on you but, even young sun worshipers have been known to get this; them more likely than us old goats, that don't lie out in the sun smothered in cooking oil like the beach bunnies do. I'm sure the surgery will be successful. Stay tough.

I've always been more worried about the back of my ears more than anything else.

God bless you, Admin Pete . Let us know how things go. Thank you, I will. I trust God no matter how things go. I stay postive, tonight I have a game, so I am going to go have some fun with friends. Laughter is the best medicine and our games have plenty of that.

It is 9:15 PM as I write this and I have to be there for surgery in the morning at 7:30 AM on Monday. One thing about this is that the fast track to get it taken care of. Last night on Saturday we met for our OD&D campaign and it went really well and we had a lot of laughs. Thank you all for your support, prayers and best wishes it means a lot. I will let you all know how it turns out.

The doctor thought the surgery went well and now about 14 hours later most of the nerve block has worn off. They are sending all of the removed tissue to make sure they had a margin all the way around the cancer. They cut around it and then below it they went all the way down to muscle. I go back on he 22nd for follow up and to get the results of the tissue study. The nerve block was an incredible feeling, my entire right arm was completely numb and hung completely limp yesterday. I had no idea that my arm was that heavy or what it would be like to have a limb paralyzed. About 11pm last night I was able to wiggle a finger and thumb a little and then it gradually wore off from there. I should be able to go back to work tomorrow. Thank you all for the encouragement.

Glad to see you up and about again. I'm confident the doctors did well, and freed you of this. So keep us updated if you like.
Also, didn't you put it in a sling? Would have been easier than letting it dangle about.

Yes, they did put it in a sling, I was just commenting on what it was like before it went into the sling at the hospital and how difficult it was to manage even in the sling.

Yeah, I remember whacking myself in the face with an arm that had completely gone to sleep one night. Bloody heavy things, limbs.
Glad to hear things are looking up.

Once I spent the night on an air mattress on the floor at a friends house after a concert, and woke up freezing cold and hungover in the morning with both arms gone to sleep. Never experienced that before, but I had a terrible time trying to get up, I can tell you! Anyway, good to hear things went well, Admin Pete !

Thankful your surgery was a success, hope the first day back at work has felt like a day among the living! We are short-handed right now so it was not a good time to be off, so my co-worker was grateful to have me back so we are each doing two jobs. Two days of doing all four jobs was not to her liking. But thats ok she is going to be off a day or so herself. One really good thing is that I was completely off the pain meds within 48 hours.

In dwarf years you're but a toddler. In elf years, I don't think you're born yet!
