Living statues can be quite cool. They make me think of Conan stories, which isn't a bad thing...

Living statues can be quite cool. They make me think of Conan stories, which isn't a bad thing... That is where I got my inspiration for them, it is something that I use a lot in dungeons. They don't eat or anything else, they just stand there until they are needed. My players have tried all kinds of things to get at treasures without activating the living statues. They came up with lots of things I didn't think of, they only had a couple of successes and lots of "lets get out of here quick".

Statue in town square. On midsummer's day, the villagers gather around it and draw lots. The lucky winner can implore the statue to host the spirit of a lost loved one. The statue then speaks and becomes temporarily. People hold various opinions about the identity of the spirit.

I've never seen that anyplace, but I would like to. As I noted above that is something I like and use.

It's something connected to my DVD collection and so this will be up in the near future, probably for OD&D as well, but my version of OD&D.

I have fond memories of living statues from my B/X days, a nice low-level alternative to golems. I liked the rockmen(?) from the Butterfield et al. book What is Dungeons and Dragons, which was my introduction to D&D.
